Back in the 1970s just about all the SEC schools had club soccer programs. I played at Alabama after previously playing for a small college in Florida before Vietnam interrupted my stellar college athletic career.

Georgia and Alabama were particularly strong in the early mid-70s with Alabama becoming the premiere program in the late '70s because of the play of Armando Betancourt who later won the Herman trophy while playing for Indiana University.

And back then there was a proto-type SEC tournament. In 1974 it was held in Tuscaloosa and Georgia won.

Interesting trivia from that tournament ... in the second round, LSU lost to Georgia about 5-0. The game was declared defaulted with about 5-mins. remaining after LSU kept sending a banished player back on the field wearing a different number. After the game most of the LSU team was arrested for assaulting the referee. True story...

Add Beach Volleyball for the ladies to free up some money for men's soccer.

WRONG. The question is what women's sport do you want to add? Equestrian is actually pretty cheap when you consider the athletes already have their own horses, Lacrosse is a good choice since they can share resources with women's soccer (every SEC school has that), Beach Volleyball... do I really have to go over the pros of beach volleyball?

From what I've heard there is serious consideration to move the season to the spring, which is the first step. After that, we need some way around Title IX. But I fully expect it to take off one way or another simply because in any big city I'm in, I see more kids 10 an under with a Messi jersey on than anything else. Demand is there.

So if you want to get in on the momentum, I'd suggest following a Premier League team. #COYG

Men's soccer is 9.9 scholarships.

Women's Fencing is 5 scholarships.
Women's Bowling is 5 scholarships.
Women's Field Hockey is 15 scholarships.
Women's Equestrian is 15 scholarships.
Women's Lacrosse is 12 scholarships.
Women's Rowing is 20 scholarships.
Women's Beach Volleyball is only 3 scholarships.

We already have equestrian in several SEC schools, Horses are usually provided by the schools. its actually an expensive sport. Not sure on the other schools, but Auburn gets quite a bit of revenue/donations out of it though

I just dont think the SEC will be able to compete in the sport, luckily mens lacrosse is growing in the south

another huge pro of equestrian.... the athletes usually come from wealthy circles.

Same goes for upper class sports like rowing, fencing, etc.

We have four... literally the bare minimum to hold a conference championship.

Law makers to decide that having mens soccer and wrestling is worth more than sex with their wives.

Title IX will never be overturned. It's not about college sports. The NCAA just needs to change scholarship limits for sports, and that's probably a clusterfrick of a process, but nothing money can't fix.

Agreed the scholarships used to be a lot more versatile in the beginning. Heck, Sarah Patterson (our legendary gymnastics coach) was able to use a left over women's basketball scholarship to hire an assistant and buy equipment in the 70s.

What I think needs to happen is the SEC gets a slush fund together for these "fringe" women's sports' capital expenditure projects. Like a sliver of SEC Network revenue goes in to a pool of money for these sports. The conference can then decide the best way to allocate it. If a certain school needs more money to make it happen, so be it. I get that no one needs it at the end of the day, but it would be a great way to kick start getting men's soccer.

Speaking of women's equestrian- anyone know how Precious, the high school girlfriend of L Tunsil, how her equestrian career at Ole Miss turned out? Seemed odd a 230 pounder could be such a horse rider, good enough to earn a full ride to a D1 school.
