That's horse shite. He could go back at any time after he retires and get a one year HS coaches asst. job (or any other state job) to get his pension.
Not true.
"With less than 10 years of service, the member may leave contributions in the system for up to five years. If the member has not returned to employment as a participating member, the account will be terminated and contributions plus any refundable accrued interest will be payable to the member."

Here's another retirement issue:
Sure, Cochran could have come back within five years and gotten a HS coaching job (which he wouldn't do anyway).
But even if he did, his Alabama retirement is based on the average salary of his best five years.
If his tenth year is a high school job, then Cochran would have to use his 2011 salary of $290,000 to arrive at that average. Now he will get to replace the $290,000 figure with $500,000. That should cause his average salary to jump considerably.

You do know the university is not paying him tht much money, right? Coaches pay is subsidized by boosters. Saban probably makes in the $250k/year range from the state. When I worked at AU, the state only payed Tubs 160k/year. The "stay because of pension" line is a myth, and fanbase bullshite.

Nah, Saban's record against non-SEC teams is dominant as well. A couple of bowl losses won't change that, as the Spartans will soon discover.

I thought it was the best three.
Regardless, Cochran currently makes $422,000.

How do people keep messing up facts easily found online?
No, it is not. Retirement for Tier 1 employees in both the Teachers & Employees Retirement Systems is based on the average of the employees three highest annual salaries in their last 10 years of employment.

Which in football money terms isn't much. As the auburn poster said : 90+% of the staff's salary is donor funded. Which makes sense.

Does a strength and conditioning coach really make that much if a difference? I don't think so
Making this statement means you know dick about major college football. No one spends more time with players year in year out than the S&C coach. He's also a major point of recruiting once potentials get on campus. SC is easily worth double what he makes.

The principle is the same. $500,000 is quite a bit more than the number it would be replacing.

Is Cochran technically a state employee though? I thought the assistants were all hired through the athletic foundation separate from the University itself

To me the bigger issue is having the state health insurance at retirement

Incredible hire. He was my strength coach for 2 years in high school and he was the best strength coach I'd ever worked with and he had an awesome pedigree (he, Cochran I think, Moffitt, and a few other guys at SEC schools all learned from the same person) and on top of that he's a great guy. He's one of the best in the country IMO and he really comes across as a smart knowledgeable guy and not some dumb meathead douche like a lot of strength coaches
