There's one thing every coach in America knows. That if they were to be offered the Bama job, there's nowhere thats more willing to pay top money for assistants in order to win.

Must not have been paying your assistant S&C coach top money.

UGA was willing to match but Cochran being a year away from a lifetime check from the state of Alabama was too much to overcome. Congrats on keeping him in Tuscaloosa.

Getting paid 30-40k per year in pension was not a factor in him staying. He'll average 50k in returns on that raise alone.

That's horse shite. He could go back at any time after he retires and get a one year HS coaches asst. job (or any other state job) to get his pension.

I doubt the retirement was that big of an incentive, but your numbers are way off. If he were to retire with only 10 years of service the pension he'll draw will be over $100,000 a year.

The formula is 2.0125% for every year of service so at 500000 a year, his pension at retirement goes up $10,000. The only 'hitch' is that if you retire with less than 25 years of service, you can't draw until you're 60. It is also a defined benefits plan so he'll draw it for the rest of his life. There's also an option where he can draw a reduced amount and his beneficary(s) will draw for the rest of their lives too.

No. If you leave with less than 10 years of service, you've only got 5 years to return to service. If you don't your account is closed and your contributions + interest are refunded to you. If you return at a later date, you can buy the time back but it costs you what you'd put in plus all the interest it would have earned from the time you first entered service to the date you returned to service. In Cochran's case, at his salary you'd be talking literally millions of dollars.

Hush money, so the NCAA doesn't find out about all the roids being given out. That's why former bama players become useless in the NFL, not more roid cocktails...

Thank you Bama for paying Cochran until his mentor at LSU retires, and he inevitably comes home.
