Good info in thread. Bonus questions: How would LSU react if a team required them to wear the purple on the road? Has this ever happened?
Oregon St. forced us to wear them at home in 2004 and Miss St. did the same in 2007 on the road.

'Cause the fans start swaying back and forth singing the Barney theme song. Then the students start giving each other wedgies, revealing rainbow striped underwear, and old women start dancing in the aisles pretending to be Prince. It's a freakin' mess.

It isn't bad at night, but the heat is brutal during the day. It's best to make the other team wear their teams dark color while we are slightly cooler in white.
We will only play in purple at night vs some crap teams like ULM and Sam Houston state.

The tradition started in 1958, when Coach Paul Dietzel decided that LSU would wear white jerseys for the home games. LSU went on to win the national championship that year
That's a contested National Championship...
quote:
In 1958 Iowa won one the Football Writers poll, arguably the most prestigious organization at the time to vote on a national champion after the bowls were played. LSU won all other major polls, and widely considered as the National Champions.
It is considered a split title because LSU played an extremely weak schedule that included no teams with black athletes. Iowa played a much more difficult schedule and was much more impressive in doing so, think 2007 Florida 13-1 vs. Utah 13-0. Florida were National Champions, Utah was not.
1958:
Iowa Integrated National Champions
LSU White-Only National Champions
The NCAA recognizes both teams being National Champs for 1958.

The Chinese Bandits spit on your "split national championship."

What? The '58 team couldn't find enough Sambo masks to go around? They had to go with the Charlie Chan?

LSU coach Paul Dietzel split his team into three groups to minimize fatigue.
White Team consisted of Billy Hendrix, Lynn LeBlanc, Larry Kahlden, Max Fugler, Ed McCreedy, Bo Strange, Mickey Mangham, Warren Rabb, Billy Cannon, Johnny Robinson, and Red Brodnax.
Go Team consisted of Scott McClain, Dave McCarty, Al Dampier, Bobby Greenwood, Mike Stupka, Jack Frayer,Don Norwood, Durel Matherne,Don Purvis,Donnie Daye, Tommy Davis
Chinese Bandits consisted of Andy Bourgeois, Carroll Bergeron, Mel Branch, Ed Cassidy, Emile Fournet, John Langan, Tommy Lott, Duane Leopard, Gaynell Kinchen,Darryl Jenkins, Henry Lee Roberts, Hart Bourque, Merle Schexnaildre
There was a comic strip called "Terry and the Pirates" 'way back before WWII. There were some characters on that strip called the Chinese Bandits who were supposed to be the meanest, baddest men on earth. Coach Dietzel named LSU's third string after the Chinese Bandits because of their tenacity. Nickname kinda fell to the wayside after playing both ways fell out of favor. Stovall resurrected the name for his defenses in the early 80s. Stuck ever since.
LSU Chinese Bandits
Played after every defensive stop.

Football teams shouldn't wear purple. Minnesota, Baltimore, TCU, LSU, etc. Just not a football color, the whites look so much better.

Purple >>>> maroon. I'm not kidding about that.

Compare the records of teams wearing maroon with those wearing purple. It's eye-opening.

The purple jerseys are ugly IMO. It makes us look like a FCS school. A purple uniform could look good, but it would have to be redesigned differently than the white jerseys.

Have always loved the purples. Think all of the new school alternative uniforms look like crap. The gold jerseys and white helmet weren't terrible, though.

TD (particularly the fark board) has been a goldmine for possible LSU uniforms.

I would love to see what the Tigers would look like in Black Unis.

Someone needs to make this shite happen. That's a beautiful uniform.

The all white and the grey and gold actually look pretty good. Is it bad that I thought pic #3 looked good, as well?
