The rap on Richt was that he had great recruiting and then would get humiliated by UF. Or lose to GT. Nuh-uh.

Oh-oh... that sounds familiar.

Replace UF with UGA and GT with Bama and it kinda sounds like Gus.

There is no way Kirby is fired after two years.

Fans are fricking nuts.

My point was that he's gotta prove himself as a coach on the field this year and at least show signs that they're trending upwards. That goes a long way in recruiting.

For the expectations of the fanbase, another 8-5 type of season isn't good enough. I'm willing to excuse last season's performance as it was his first year as a HC. He doesn't get that kind of leeway a second time around - the expectations will be high from here on out.

He was brought in to build on the success of Richt. We'll know for sure if he was the right man for that job over the next two seasons.

When you consider the population of the state of GA, it's probably the most football talent-rich state per capita of any state in the country. Expectations should be high for the flagship school in a state like that.

We just had the #3 class.

And Kirby was able to talk a few kids in not going pro. Each player that is good enough to think about going pro is like getting a seasoned 5 star.

I'm not sure why I even replied to this thread. The guy acts like signing day just happened.

....and I think Mark Richt was a great hire for Miami.

Damn, is that early signing day in June? I thought it was in December. I guess the dynasty is over. We'll sign a bunch of 2 stars and struggle to compete.

Not sure if firing Richt was the huge mistake, I think it was more the Smart hire being the mistake.

I agree with this. Georgia needed to move on but Richt needed a fresh start as well.

Honestly I'm surprised this thread is still going on. But I will give you guys credit.

I just made an observation that Georgia is losing to teams like Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, and Ole Miss now. And also Smart is terrible at recruiting obviously.

Just totally confused on how this is considered an "upgrade" when Georgia would have won the SEC East with Richt

Georgia was one of the last teams to play a mostly healthy Ole Miss.

That said, the Georgia coaching staff looked completely clueless. Ole Miss could've picked the final score.

He didn't win it in 2014 with the best team in the East by a country mile

Ole Miss has Kirby's number. That little two game win streak over Bama was with Kirby calling the defense that got torched by Freeze. I wouldn't judge his career based on that. Give him time. Richt was a good recruiter but he was as soft as a baby's bottom on his kids and that showed up in spades in the trenches. UGA is still trying to recover.

It's based off the fact that the state of Georgia is bursting at the seams with in-state talent. Mix that with us being the flagship university with a rich football history and top tier money/facilities (now that we seem to care about them) yes we should be in the SEC mix every year. Sorry Auburn plays second fiddle to both Alabama and Georgia in this regard.
