UAB released plans a few years ago about building their own on-campus stadium but have since scratched them, prob money i guess.

Na they had the money and everything planned out. Maybe one day that'll get built. I wouldn't be surprised to see a dome though.

What did langford instill in y'all to want a dome so bad?

I think those plans for UAB's stadium looks cool. Bham cant support a domed stadium.

From what I remember they needed a pretty big commitment from the UA Board of Trustees, but didn't get it. Or was that something else?

UAB and Birmingham should have teamed up when Birmingham wanted to build a dome. I doubt they would have ever come to an agreement though.

I remember as a kid watching or listening to games in Legion and Memorial. Along with the Cocktail party, those games were part of the old SEC culture. Before my time it seemed SEC played a great deal of games in non SEC towns, Memphis, Mobile, Shreveport for example. Lately the SEC is trending towards more of these.

It is being explained that it is needed more for trade shows, etc. The BJCC isn't large enough to host large shows and they need the floor space to attract events they are currently turning away.

its not much now, but from the late 40's until 1990 or so it was one of the premier stadiums in all of college football.

False - as an ole miss fan, I'll take it you didn't go to y'all's bowl game here. Birmingham has a lot going on and clearly you have no idea what you're talking about.

As an Ole Miss fan who went to the BBVA compass bowl I can tell you that it sucked. My least favorite Ole Miss road trip so far behind Austin, Nashville, Dallas, Memphis and Starkville in that order. I'm going to Atlanta tomorrow. I expect it'll challenge Austin. Legion field is awful, the neighborhood is shitty, and the attractions aren't anywhere near the stadium.

You thought Austin, Dallas and Nashville were shitty? What cities DO you like?

UAB did not have the money to build their own stadium. They wanted funding from UA BOT and the BOT shot that shite to the curb. Why pour millions into a stadium for a football program that can't even get their own students to attend even their biggest games? UAB football has no fan support - it would be dumping money into a pit with no chance of seeing a profit.

Uab is better off canceling the football program than to continue playing in that dump.

UAB should just cancel their program period. Not sure who's brilliant idea it was to start up a new college football program in a state that already has 2 established powers, and 70 miles away from one of the most storied and supported ones in the country. Do they ever really see themselves building a fan base and playing at a decent level?

I mean, 95% of the UAB students are bigger Alabama (and sometimes Auburn) fans than they are UAB fans.

And if I were not going to the beach this weekend, I'd be going to Legion Field for the UAB-Troy game. They decided on a Noon kickoff. Who in their right mind has an outdoor football game in late August from noon to 3? We roasted out there 4 years ago. Had to move to the home side so my dad and daughter could be in the shade. And two years ago it was like 95 degrees, but it rained hard at least 3 times during the game. They had to stop play a couple of times. Then it blew over and it was like a steamroom out there. Just miserable.

The stadium is a dump, as is. Thankfully they tore down the old upper deck. That thing was literally dangerous to be in or under.

I'm all for Birmingham building a dome or stadium. They shouldn't need more than about 35-50k seats in it. If they could locate it near campus, or even near Railroad park and Regions Field, it would be great. The problem is land isn't freely available for something that size. There would be a huge bump in attendance if it was in the heart of downtown instead of the ghetto. They could even move the HS state championships back to Birmingham instead of this rotation they have going.

No, he'll most likely perish there unless they release him early.

They need to move them to Cramton Bowl in Montgomery.

Birmingham does need a new stadium/arena/convention center. The BJCC is terribly outdated and is quickly becoming a dump comparable to Legion Field in the late 90's.

Just not so sure a 70-80,000 seat dome is what is needed, which is what they wanted. The plans were long ago scrapped anyway. If Birmingham gets anything, it'll be a new arena to replace the BJCC.

Like I said 35-50k would be more than enough. They could also host NCAA basketball games early in the tournament there. And move the HS state championship basketball games there away from the BJCC. But that would mean a dome. I just don't see that getting done. UAB will get a stadium before Bham gets a dome. Although it would be nice to see an all in one venue.

UAB has the same problem as most Southern non BCS schools. No one cares and they will never care. Its just a fact of life.

yeah, even Ladd Stadium is the perfect size for South Alabama. Problem is that the stadium is in a part of town that makes most folks uncomfortable.

kinda the same thing location wise with Legion Field.

the crowds are never really that big at USA games but the USA-Miss State game is almost sold out somehow. I guess State is bringing a lot of fans.

What's your point? No one claims Legion Field. It's an old dump that has been abandoned for 2 decades now. You could laugh if Legion Field was actually trying to recruit neutral site openers but obviously it is not.
