A white supremacist group applied for a parade permit here next to campus 3-4 years ago. The city granted it and the CPD had a media blitz where they asked everybody to not give them any attention and just stay away. Which pretty much worked. They marched for a few blocks down some mostly empty streets, milled around for a bit, and left.

That was the strategy for years and it generally worked well.

Then the 2016 election happened and things changed. Hard to ignore them like people used to at this point.

Never. Eventually that fact is going to haunt them.

Please call it what it is White Supremacist , not White Nationalist. It is a way for the press to group every white person into a group in hopes of creating guilt.

First of all White is not a race, even if it was the label of White Nationalist would mean developing and maintaining a white national identity.

These idiots are white supremacist, their goals are not about White National Identity.

I hate how they're turning "White Nationalist" into a negative racial term. I'm a White guy. I support our country more than any other. I guess that makes me a white nationalist.

Says who? Richard Spencer's list of aspects about him has more shite than just the two things you mentioned. Don't be obtuse.

What happened in Charlottesville wasn't just Spencer speaking. It was a planned rally with groups busing in to protest taking down a Confederate statue. The gunpowder was just waiting to be lit and some racist murderer lit it.

When Spencer speaks (as he did at Auburn and A&M), it's him and a few other nutjobs. This was hundreds to thousands of them. Little bit different in terms of possibility of volcanic eruption, at least it was. I'm sure things will be ratcheted up significantly now, even at just his "speaking stops".

The violence happens because "counter protesters" show up to quarrel.

What is to be gained by "counter protesting" and trying to "shut down" their speeches or rallies? Nothing.

I watched the outrage by a panel on CNN today. Most people on it profit from the industry of racism and use it to be relevant. They were more outraged by one sentence by Trump than the actions of a few people on both sides. Most know what we saw was not a reflection of how people feel in the country. But the CNNs of the world will exploit it to their benefit.

white nationalists, like richard spencer, think that america is of the whites for the whites. they think that white people should literally be the only group that has a say in this country and that all other races, and some even feel this way about women, are subservient and lesser than

they dont support america, they support an america that is completely controlled by the white race

...you guys are arguing over semantics here.

SummerOfGeorge makes a good point about ignoring idiots like the statue protestors in C'Ville. Rational people know this is the smart thing to do. Unfortunately, there are many who aren't rational and actively seek out violent confrontation with anyone who doesn't conform to their worldview.

A Nationalist is defined:
a person who advocates political independence for a country.

So if you fit the definition as an advocate for political independence you can be Black, White, Hispanic or Asian. When people confuse (sometimes intentionally) with the word Supremacist, it does a disservice to those American who believe in the Nationalist Cause. Words do matter and how they are used.

If I'm a white player or fan of Washington's pro baseball team, am I therefore called a white nationalist?
