Property taxes in some areas of Houston are some of the highest I've ever seen in the US. I pay ~4% but some neighborhoods pay up to 5.2% in property taxes, mud taxes, etc. That is every year folks. 5.2% of a $500k home is going to cost you $26k a year ($2,167/month) in property taxes.
Stallworth stadium in Baytown is the largest stadium in Houston but it's only 9th in the state. Ratliffe in Odessa, Buccaneer in Corpus, Allen Eagle, Farrington in Fort Worth, Alamo stadium in San Antonio, Memorial in Mesquite at 20,000 capacity. Texas is kinda weird in that most stadiums are for multiple schools. So that they may have a couple games on Thursday, Friday then several on a Saturday. I hate HS football on Saturday. That's crazy but that's Texas.
Houston has about 5,000 people move into the city every month. It is growing astronomically. I think Katy just opened up 2 new HS' in the last 2/3 years. Conroe opened up several. Take a place like Pearland where they play in a huge stadium as well. They have a VIP parking section where each of those boosters pay like $1,000 a year to get a parking spot. There's probably at least 300 - 400 spots. That's a shite load of booster money.

You ever heard of john curtis? How about evangel? West monroe? Rummel? Just to name a few powerhouses in louisiana. You gotta be kidding right? Louisana is loaded with talent always and has some legendary programs. Just because katy has 5000 students doesn't mean jack shite, ask hoover high and plant high about that. John curtis has maybe 400 total but you know what? About 100 of them play football and most of them are recruited to go there out of junior high, the rest of them are damn good players that only go to school there to play football on the highest level in high school and to win championships...not just state titles but national titles. They have their pick of the best talent in new orleans for the most part. Do some research.

The highest taxes of any area in Houston are around 4%. The Mud taxes are the biggest variable especially in new areas. Still no fun paying 4% every year.

Having just moved back to Huntsville from Austin - this is not a single example. As was mentioned no state income tax but this is not the reason. As best I can remember local school boards have to issue bonds for these palaces and those bonds have to be voted on by the locals so the increase the locals are voting for increased taxes to build a stadium. The first high end one was early 2000's and literally across the street from me in north Austin. Luckily the street was the boundary for school zones so I didn't pay for the 20 million stadium. However that stadium was used as a model for other schools to get bigger/better etc. Some of the bigger ones also have campus type building so you can have indoor events. It always drove me crazy to see some of the crap the school districts tossed out to justify these - never have to pay rent for a graduation place again. I guess no one ever asked how many graduations needed to occur to offset the construction. Plus a lot of them now how the big screen ad TV's so you get the "in your face" experience.
