Just because the Little Rock Observer and Tupelo Gazette named them National Champions doesn't mean they actually won a National Championship.

AP and the UPI all picked different teams that year

It was settled on the field. Arkansas is 64'

11-0 Arkansas beat #2 Nebraska and #4 Texas

10-1 Alabama lost to #4 Texas

8 years for LSU? Didn't realize it had been that long. Time flies.

Actually these organizations voted LSU #1 following the 2011 season:

Congrove Computer Rankings
GBE College Football Ratings
Hogan Poll
James Howell
Nutshell Sports Football Ratings
Rogers Poll
Seattle Times

So technically it's only been 3 years since LSU's last national championship in football.

I mean, it's open season and there's no limit now, right?

The FWAA was as respected as the AP or UPI in the 60s.

None the NCAA doesn't "recognize" a 1-A champion

I've heard the '64 Razorbacks referred to as national champions like 500 times in my life, by like 500 sources. I'm inclined to say AP and UPI be damned. And a little [further] research on the subject reveals this:

In 1964 AP and UPI (and most others) still voted their National Champions before the bowls. Most of us know this. In 1964 both Arkansas and Alabama finished their regular seasons undefeated (10-0). AP and UPI voted Alabama #1 and Arkansas #2.

THE KICKER: Alabama lost the Orange Bowl (to Texas) to finish 10-1. Arkansas won the Cotton Bowl (over #7 Nebraska) to finish 11-0. The Football Writers Association of America, which waited until after the bowls to vote its nat. champ, obviously chose Arkansas. And it obviously looked superior to either AP or UPI, which obviously ended up looking STOOPID.

KICKER #2 (THE FINISHER): The VERY NEXT season AP waited until after the bowls to name its national champion.

I'm thinking given this information we can now ALL include 1964 with 1941 re Alabama's CLAIM on national championships.

The NCAA has published lists of national championships for years. I'm not sure how that's not recognition.

You can add a couple kickers to those. The next year, Alabama finished #1 in the post-bowl poll after finishing farther down at the end of the next season. The next year, the AP voted pre-bowl again.

In saying the don't recogize a true champion from 1-A because there is no NCAA sanctioned tournament that is won.

eta: like you have in 1-AA and baseball, basketball, and every other sport

Good Job Aggie.

Texas was #1 until they lost to Arkansas.

bullshite call by a Texas referee. Namath was clearly over the goal line. Had replay been around, there would be no debate.

Alabama claims the 1941 title when they had but one selector pick them, 7 selected LSU #1 after 2011.

Therefore LSU 2011 claim > 1941 Alabama clam.
