Ball carries are not defenseless. But yes, he shouldn't have dived with his helmet.
Sliding ball carriers with their asses on the ground trying to end the play are defenseless players by rule:
quote:
Note 2: Defenseless player (Rule 2-27-14):
• A player on the ground.

Hope the kid makes a full recovery and balls out when he makes it back. And yes... it was targeting and should have been called.

He led in with his helmet and actually made contact helmet to helmet. He did eventually hut with his shoulder, but less tame hits have been called across the country. That was a definite targeting hit.
As for Murray he was not a defenseless runner and the defender was coming in low for the tackle then Murray decided to drop down. Not a targeting type hit.
Refs let it go but that's football and now everyone can move on accept the injured players. Next game please.

Murray was sitting on the ground and got hit square on the helmet

Murray created the angle in which he was hit. If he knew how to slide like he knows how to throw picks then he wouldn't have gotten hit.
RSJ's was pure targeting. Plain and simple.

Simultaneous actions and was a good non call. Unfortunate for QB. Sealed Jones was intent on causing maximum damage and got away with it. You will one day catch up and understand how this all works.
I have no skin in the fight for either team. Just offering correct analysis of what actually happened.

If one was targeting, so was the other. A player on the ground is a defenseless player.
quote:
Defenseless player—a player not in position to defend himself.
Examples (Rule 2-27-14):
A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass.
A receiver attempting to catch a pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier.
A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return.
A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick.
A player on the ground.
A player obviously out of the play.
A player who receives a blind-side block.
A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped.
A quarterback any time after a change of possession.
Murray began his slid at the 5 yard line while #24 was still in the endzone. See this video at 0:03. #24 had time to pull up, just like his teammate, #18 did. When he made contact, Murray's arse was on the ground. See video at 0:11.
The hit on Murray was a text-book example of targeting, because:
quote:
Targeting and Initiating Contact to Head or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player (Rule 9-1-4)
No player shall target and initiate contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, forearm, fist, elbow or shoulder. When in question, it is a foul. (Rule 2-27-14)
AND
Examples of Targeting include, but are not limited to:
quote:
Launch—a player leaving his feet to attack an opponent by an upward and forward thrust of the body to make contact in the head or neck area
A crouch followed by an upward and forward thrust to attack with contact at the head or neck area—even though one or both feet are still on the ground
Leading with helmet, forearm, fist, hand or elbow to attack with contact at the head or neck area
Lowering the head before attacking by initiating contact with the crown of the helmet
#24 launched his body at Murray and hit made contact with his head.
This is Interpreting Statutes 101. The elements are met:
1. contact
2. with helmet or shoulder
3. to head or neck area
4. of a defenseless player

A lot of words to say you're wrong.

How is the guy defenseless?

Now I know you're delusional as frick. He made a cut at the 5 yard line. He started falling down on the 3. How do you fools keep calling it a slide? He was aiming for the endzone, and at the last second tried to avoid contact without sliding. That's why he turned his head. He knew he'd fricked up. He was hit well before his butt hit the ground. That's why they have QB slides. THIS IS A QB SLIDE

I'm with you and agree Murray wasn't defenseless. No argument at all on that.

Looks like his clumsy teammate caused the injuries. Sucks either way, but...Targeting?
