Surely not. Richt is a pretty young guy for that.

This.

You can make a promise that IF Richt is fired after next year, Kirby will get the job. You can't make that public, however.

I've been saying it for 3 months...and was told how stupid I was by my fellow Bama fans. Its the "Smart" move for him to make. As long as he is at Alabama all the credit for a strong D will go to Saban

I have too except the fellow Bama fans part

Capestonegrad06 kept trying to tell me he would never make a lateral move. Don't eva doubt memphis

On a positive note, it's better that he leaves this year instead of next year, for continuity's sake. We've got a bunch of new DB's coming in this year. They can start off with someone new this year rather than experiencing a change like this next year.

I cannot make any good argument for him leaving Bama for a lateral position. Especially to play against Saban and with less talent on D....that will be a head scratcher if true.

MONEY. Plain and simple.

He should just wait until another head coaching job opens up but don't go laterally to UGA which is a sinking ship

He just had a major part in winnig us a NC. Other DC's around the SEC have gotten big raises this year.

Kirby is due a fat raise and he will stay.

You guys don't get it... Saban puts the clamps down on his assistants. You don't got to work for Saban to get exposure.

Outside of Bobby Williams (who was a miserable failure) who has left a Saban staff for a HC position?... I'll hang up and listen.

I heard rumors, but I didn't think there was any truth to them. I hope this is true

Who on our staff would be a shock to get a HC position?

Smart? no.
McElwain? no.
Sunseri? no.

That wasn't the question, and obviously Smart didn't like his chances and is taking a lateral position.

Sanseri?... no way. He's not even coordinator material.

McElwain?... could be. Fresno might open up next year and he could end up there.

The blood is in the water but nothing official or even really, airtight reliable as of yet.

However, all you need to know as to why he would make a lateral move is every announcer on the MNC broadcast calling it Saban's defense. Not to mention, at least in the first half which I watched, I didn't see one shot of a Bama coach besides Saban. Plenty of Muschamp.

There will definitely be money and a lot of it involved. No doubt.

Just as expected. Waited until after BCSNCG to avoid "clutter"...he'll be in Athens within the next two days.

I wonder if we matched whatever UGA offered if he'd stay. I'm not saying we will match it, but if we did, would he stay. FWIW, I don't think we will try to match it if it's an outrageous amount.

I don't think we'd dig too deep to match it. He is making the best choice for his long term career goals, so I think its a foregone conclusion that moving on is in his best interest.

Smart filled the role admirably after Steele, Sunseri will fill it well after Smart.

Thanks for your service Kirby! Its been a good run. Best of luck to you, and I hope we meet you in Atlanta in Dec '10...

As long as Saban is there the defense will always be strong. Saban's always had turnover. Gibbs, Muschamp, Steele, etc.

Smart to Georgia is a death sentence for his coaching career.

Isn't Georgia his alma mater ??

He is a very inteligent guy. Not a lateral move from my humble opinion. We all know the dc at Bama.

Even Steele said at the end of the day it is Saban's defense. He makes defensive coordinators out of anyone. They hold the position but he pulls the strings.
