I can guarantee that teams like UGA that have lost games they shouldn't have recently would have had a shot.

Which is why we shouldn't go to 8 games. There are a lot of teams that would have a shot if the playoff included more teams. The point of the playoff is to make sure the best team isn't excluded while maximizing the chance that the best team will win. Expanding the field will make the former more likely, but also the latter. College football should not be like the NFL, where a team can have a mediocre season and then suddenly get hot in the playoffs and win a championship.

You'd still have your top four best teams, but the next four teams would be the one loss powerhouses.

If the top four are the four best, then why do you need any more? Going all the way down to #8 would have included Mississippi State and Michigan State last year, and 9-3 Ole Miss would have barely missed it at #9. Including those teams would only make it less likely that the best team wins the title. Why would we want to do that?

Methinks the networks can squeeze a couple more into the schedule and turn it into a net gain.

So the folks with the checkbooks get it right and protect their long term income streams. Somehow they risk that on a few extra dollars and kill it all. I just can't see it. Too many folks at the top want to keep those big pie slices than risk having to get less pie if the special needs teams get in.

You may not want to believe this, but the CCG's are here to stay and they are the defacto 8 team playoff.

I agree with this in theory, but I think the profit motives will bet too great to keep them from actually expanding the CFP as well. I hope they stop at 6 teams, but probably it will keep on growing like the NCAA tourney.

Not really as the NCAA controlled the basketball 100%. They used to control the football too till Oklahoma and Georgia went to the Supreme Court, now each conference controls their own slice of the pie. Only way for what you want to happen would be for the NCAA to regain the football monopoly. Do you really think that will ever happen?

6 is enough. Top 2 get a bye. Too many opportunities for bullshite rematches with 8 and ruins the hype of the cfb regular season.

IF we had to expand, 6 is as far as i would want to see it.

if they go to 8 teams i'll just watch more nfl ball.

the season is the playoff in cfb, let's keep it that way.

I think 8 is too many. 6 would OK.

#1 and #2 - Bye

#3 plays #4 - Winner plays #1

#5 plays #6 - Winner plays #2

Winner of #1 and #3/#4 plays winner of #2 and #5/#6.

Only way to do it with more than 4 teams in my eyes.

Here is the problem with 6 teams , 2 getting byes ...
Last year ..

the Rankings:
1 ALABAMA 12-1
2 OREGON 12-1
3 FSU 13-0
4 OSU 12-1
5 BU 11-1
6 TCU 11-1

1. FSU undefeated defending champ, already ticked they weren't ranked #1, you think there wouldn't be hell. If they didn't get a bye, being the only unbeaten. (granted they would have gotten beaten by all the other 5, but that's not the point)

2. Everyone on this board would have lost their mind in a unanimous Melt if the B12 had gotten 2 teams in.

*** this is why there should be 8... 5 Automatics, reward for doing the one thing you can control; , win your conference. 3 others for those teams getting hot late , but a little to late.

SEC didn't have an obvious second team to put in the top 6 last year. The only team in hindsight that would have been justified to be angry left out would be Michigan St.

Considering going into the playoff OSU barely got in, a 6 team play off last year would have been amazing.

I like the incremental reward of a 6 team playoff, the top two, who would have been straight into a title game under the BCS getting an easier path. The only thing I don't like about it is it would be nearly impossible or there to ever be an truly perfect season - any team going undefeated in the reg would get a bye, so you'd never get to see 16-0 unless 3 teams went undefeated and the 3rd ranked team won it all.
