If we're talking SEC, it may not mean that much to a lot of people, but Vandy-MTSU is big for both teams and pretty interesting to a lot of people in middle Tennessee.

Why is Vandy traveling to MTSU?
They need to be careful, Missouri displayed an abysmal performance last season and lost to MTSU.

Oregon State and Colorado State should be decent.

Rice and Stanford will be a beat down but the Aussies should love it.

Its a shame Australia is so far away, because they would love American College Football.

And is Hawaii vs Umass the match up of the two schools the furthest away from each other in college football history?

It would have to be, right?

I think Hawaii's opener in Sydney last year was about the same distance away from Honolulu.

Worst ever? I seem to remember in the early to mid 2000s there would be one or two big games and then a bunch of assymetrical games vs. mid-majors and Division 1-AA.
I think the fact that there are four or five big games and that's considered bad is a testament to how much opening week has improved.

Guess you don't remember back when every P5 team started out playing either division 2 schools or teams from the sun belt conference in week 1 do you?.. Now that was some horrible week 1s.

Not even remotely close.

This is just a pretty pedestrian to slightly above average opening weekend.

SEC fans have been spoiled the last few years, when it comes to opening in big games. The norm used to be two teams without a pulse before anyone played anyone worth knowing about.

Some of you are going to be very, very disappointed come the morning of September 3rd.

I actually think an FSU loss for Bama may be a better for the end game - mainly because I think Bama drops one or 2 this year. An opening loss to FSU won't hurt them really and would likely galvanize the team. My .02

Hope the bands make the trip and rumble at halftime.
Some of Rice's band's greatest hits (I had no idea someone could rival Stanford's band).
quote:

- In 2007, the MOB used their half-time performance to poke fun at the legal woes facing some members of the Texas Longhorns. The band, wearing dark sunglasses, opened with the theme from Dragnet. Three members dressed as Longhorn football players ran around the field being chased by other band members carrying cardboard police cars. The Rice announcer narrated: "In the two years since the MOB last visited Austin, your team's demeanor — and misdemeanor — has changed. Buy a program at today's game. It includes Mack Brown's wrist-slap Top 10 and a photo guide to the next episode of America's Most Wanted."[8][9]
- In 2011, the season opener against Texas in Austin saw the MOB form $EC[10] during halftime as a commentary regarding Texas A&M leaving the Big 12 Conference and moving to the Southeastern Conference. This happened days before A&M announced its withdrawal from the Big 12 Conference and upcoming move to the SEC.
-In 2016, during the halftime performance of Rice's game against Baylor, the band formed the roman numerals "IX" in reference to Title IX, the federal law at the center of an offseason sexual assault scandal at Baylor. They also made the shape of a star while playing the song "Hit The Road Jack," alluding to the firing of former Baylor president Ken Starr in the wake of the scandal.

Penn State lost by what, 39 to Michigan? They didn't deserve to be in.

They both won 11 and Penn State beat Ohio State. They were also clearly the better team at the end of the season.

The three farthest distances are

Hawaii to Amherst vs UMass - 5,006 miles
Hawaii to Piscataway vs Rutgers - 4,935 miles
Hawaii to Philadelphia vs Temple - 4,908 miles

Their trip to Sydney was 5,071 miles. Cal had to travel 7,430 miles from Berkley.

Rice will be going 8,581 miles for their game in Sydney against Stanford who themselves are 7,419 miles away.

I know there were a few games in Tokyo too but I'm too lazy to look those up.

That's not opening weekend. Here's some games on opening weekend which is August 26th: Oregon State @ Colorado State Portland State @ BYU Hawaii @ UMASS South Florida @ San Jose State Rice vs. Stanford in Sydney, Australia.

And that's not opening weekend either. Just some 14th week additions involving Hawaii, teams playing Hawaii, and the game outside the Continental US (Rice-Stanford). Colorado State, BYU, and San Jose State all play at Hawaii this season and get the 14th week added to their schedule if wanted.

Opening weekend is when ALL schools are eligible to schedule games. There are only two other FBS schools in the entire US that were eligible to schedule games on 8/26. They are Fresno State and San Diego State because they are also playing at Hawaii this season.

They've played the last 2 years, both of which Vandy won. Before that, they played in '01, '02, and '05, which MTSU all won. Before that, they hadn't played since the fifties. Vandy went to Murfreesboro in 2015. It's only 30 minutes down the road. It's becoming a nice little rivalry.

2005 was Cutler's senior year, and they also had Earl Bennett. Vandy was 4-0, with wins over Arkansas and Ole Miss, and everyone thought it would be the year they broke the long bowl drought. Middle blocked a FG on the last play of the game that would have made Vandy 5-0. They didn't win another game until they beat Tennessee in Knoxville in the last game of the season.

And then Hawaii played AT Michigan the following week! Cal took the week off, as are Rice and Stanford this year.
