I had a friend that is a huge Bama fan do this for the SECCG in 2015.
He walked in with his wife for free.

Meh, I don't mind the higher prices. It's obviously not completely successful, but the rising prices help keep the riff raft out.

I have been saying both college and pro sports are pricing themselves out of the market for at least the last 25 years.
at one time I had season tix to both the Saints and LSU for about 300 bucks; total for two.
obviously I have been wrong and I think you are too (now). maybe the younger generation thing will slow down the demand but I doubt it.

This. College football is more popular that pro football for good reason. And all the bullshite with players like Colin Kaepernick sure didn't help the NFL.
No the frick it isnt
There is a world outside of the SEC, you know? Nothing will ever top the NFL.
Sorry a player protesting for something he believes in triggerd your precious privileged heart

Because instead of playing the game at 100,000 seat BDS where almost 100% of the tickets would be split between the two schools, we have to play it in some damn NFL amusement park where the 80,000 or so seats will be split 1/3 to each school and 1/3 to corporate sponsors and clients who don't give a rats arse about the participants in the game. So ticket-wise, that's like an away game for both schools as far as allotment goes. And that's a huge factor driving the price.

Go to game. 15 minutes before kickoff is bargian time.
You may even walk in for free.
Maybe at your stadium. Not at ours.

It happens at your stadium as well.

Things that may change football demand for tickets:
1. Participation in playing youth football is down
2. We are more mobile in our careers. Many will not live close enough to make season tickets an option.
3. Games are no longer "family friendly". Current prices are fairly high. Start times vary. A family of four could easily spend $300 or more just on ticket to a game. Throw in a modest hotel, some eats, gas, etc and $500 or $600 or $700 is spent. If one spouse or kid does not care for the game, it is expensive entertainment for no joy. Weekends are time for families to enjoy themselves. Being searched at a stadium may not be their idea of fun. Many may decide to watch on TV rather than take their spouse from Boston to every home game.

Selling tickets to events is an option market with a definitive expiration. Unused tickets expire worthless. With smartphone and many ticket sites you can pick a cheap seat close to kickoff.

College football fans are a different breed all together and if you're a fan of any team other than say Bama during the Saban Era and your team is doing well you will give anything to see them play because it may well be the only chance you get to see that perfect season.

I always wonder if the stubhub app works right at the last second at most venues. It worked for me at a Mavs game once but not sure about some of the CFB venues. I'm guessing a QR code gets the tickets?

In 1971 at the Orange Bowl, I saw people throw away tickets at the kickoff, and Alabama was playing Nebraska for the national championship...same tickets were bringing $500 a pair earlier.

If you're talking about one of the traditional college towns of the SEC, you could be talking more like $600 - $800 for the hotel alone. With the limited supply of rooms, the rates get jacked up for the decent hotels in town, and many require a 2 night minimum.

With all the activity around a stadium on game day, if you don't get in you end up watching on high def with better refreshments

You are right.
I try to stay somewhere on my way back from AU like Lagrange or Newnan. Drive an hour or so and it gets cheaper.
