Might end up being a good hire, and he has done a good job with the Rams but I too am kind of surprised.

Just lacks any kind if sizzle. He's kind of a gumpy looking dude with a flat personality. Never really hear him mentioned for other openings.

It's not sexy, but that only matters for a little while. Ultimately it's what he does on the field.

They thought they could and then Freeze said "lulz, no."

but we had Julio Jones and didn't even really use him.

78 catches for 1100+ yards his junior year. Yep, barely used him at all.....

McElwain hasn't done near enough as a HC to earn a shot at a big program IMO.

Sure, you might strike gold and get an elite coach...or you just hired another Saban assistant who flames out as a HC.

Gus Malzahn - 1 year at Arkansas St
Hugh Freeze - 2 years at Lambuth, 1 at Arkansas St
Les Miles - 4 pretty mediocre years at Oklahoma St
Mark Stoops - none
Dan Mullen - none
Mark Richt - none
Kevin Sumlin - 4 years at Houston

So half of the current coaches in the SEC had 4 or fewer years of head coaching experience prior to being hired at their current jobs. What quaifies you as having the requisite experience to be hired at a major program? Coaches with a long line of success willing to leave their current jobs are far and few between.
