I realize Foley knows more about hiring coaches than I do, but it seems like a pretty underwhelming hire from my point of view.

Who would have made you say, "Wow, that's an overwhelming hire?" Please only list available coaches and not someone like Chip Kelly.

Most of the available coaches I probably wouldn't have had an opinion on. I just thought McLewain's offesnes were pretty terrible while he was at Bama. I mean the players were good so it worked out, but we had Julio Jones and didn't even really use him.

Is Jim Harbaugh someone like Chip Kelly?

Of course. Employed head coaches in the NFL shouldn't be considered available.

But he is expected to leave San Fran. Been that way for months.

One of your fellow Bama fans said something that made sense to me. When you have Lacey, Trent and a Heisman winner in Ingram, you don't need to do too much.

I never really thought about it like that.

He also made J-mac serviceable. That's impressive.

OK. Is he expected to go back to college? Wouldn't he go to Michigan, his alma mater if he did go back to college?

Anyway, I don't think he's a great fit for UF. How many successful NFL coaches go back to the college level?

I just figured Florida would poach a bigger name or go after a small-school guy with a little more buzz. I might be biased because of his history with Bama, though.

I think he will go back to college, it fits his personality and he had negative things to say about Michigan when was at Stanford. Florida is clearly a superior job and beat out Notre Dame for the Urban Meyer sweepstakes, so it only comes down to his personal sentimental value outweighing everything else. Don't know what you mean by "not a good fit". Pro style coach

Assuming Saban was holding him back offensively from the wide open spread he wanted to run, this is a better hire than I initially thought, if he tries to run the Bama offense circa 2010 here he'll get eaten alive as the program isn't built for that kind of approach.

Saban didn't hold him back. McElwain was allowed free reign within the framework of the Saban/Alabama system -- as were all coordinators not named Kiffin. Saban, at the time, wanted to control the pace of the game, run the ball and depend on the best defense in the nation. It was a formula that won and won big and often. When you have a winning formula and studs in the backfield -- not to mention a QB of limited ability -- you don't frick with it.

McElwain did an excellent job of working within the system and demonstrated no real ego. You could see what he could do when he needed to, and it was very creative and effective.

His offense at CSU has been night and day versus what he ran at Alabama -- but from what I've heard he's implemented a lot of the Saban//Alabama process as far as preparation.

He's a great hire.

Florida's administration wont let the program use some of Bama's processes-- specifically oversigning and "processing" players-- its why Boom was always short handed-- he couldn't adapt to not being allowed to do that, hopefully McElwain is smart enough not to try that crap in Gainesville.

Also, GMac started at least one game in the NFL. John Parker Wilson is another story.

Yeah, you hear this all the time, but I can name you 5 SEC coaches right now that wouldn't leave their current job to go to Gainesville. So what good does it do being one of the 5 best jobs...if that's even true...if 5 coaches in your own conference wouldn't take the job?

Why would Saban, Richt, or Miles leave their jobs for UF right now when they're firmly entrenched?

That argument is stupid.
