I'm an LSU fan and only know of Houston Nutt by his recent run as LSU tormenter from about 2007 on. In my opinion, which may be very very wrong, he got his big name in the SEC through having one of the best collegiate backfields in the last 15 years with Darren McFadden, Felix Jones, and Peyton Hillis. Since then, all he's really done is jumped ship to Ole Miss and run that team into the ground. So is Houston Nutt actually a good coach or did he just have one fortunate run?

Back-to-back Cotton Bowls is not running the program to the ground.

He always seems to have his team ready to play the big games (LSU, Florida, etc.) but then loses ones he shouldn't.

Nutt's a pretty average coach but in his defense, wasn't Arkansas and Ole Miss in pretty dire shape before he got there?

Recruited some great talent at AR. I've always seen him as one dimensional

If he could get his teams to play at a consistent level week in and week out, he would win a lot more games. That's his achilles heel it appears.
Good, not great.

At what point did someone think Nutt was a great coach?

Decent? Sure. Great? Did someone argue for that.

sort of but Ole Miss had a lot of talent. It's not like he took a bunch of scrubs and took them to the cotton bowl.

Most misguided perception about his tenure here.

I believe he had the talent at AR to do great things but just couldn't do it. We had three great running backs in (felix jones, darren mcfadden, and peyton hillis). If we hadn't had those we would have been in trouble for sure but anyways he ran off a solid QB and ran a one dimensional offense. Sad thing is we did have a good team but lost games we shouldn't have and won a few games we probably shouldn't have.

Probably shouldn't have said "great" in the title. I feel like he got a lot of pub, especially after knocking off LSU at the end of 07, got a whole lot after beating down Texas Tech in 08, and has since slowly slid down the expectation ladder.

I've only seen one video of him lately and he gave a very passionate speech which I was very impressed by. So I guess he's just great at getting his players hyped up for the big games, but maybe not so great at recruiting and gameplanning?

He made his living off of riding Matt Jones, then McFadden, Hillis, and felix. Its not that hard to hand the ball of to one of the three...he does less with more IMO
