It makes strategic sense to avoid contact when possible, as hitting a defender slows your run and opens you up to getting hurt. Henry runs to avoid contact because he's a fast enough back to do so. Lesser backs or backs with a different skill set have to take on defenders head on.

Yes. It's not all his fault though, tall guys that run upright have a lot of sensitive areas in the tackle zone. Instead of shoulder pads it's anywhere from knees-groin-stomach

Here is a highlight of his 80 yard run against Arkansas:

Hum.... from two years ago.

That's interesting, I could have sworn Arkansas played bama last year?

Show us those highlights since that is the defense and the DC he'll be going up against this fall.

He gained 25 yards last year so maybe you can find his longest gainer where he busted out with his super human speed to burn us for 8 yards.

I guess he was hurt last year.

on that TD run Saban was like WTF!

He's like Miles. He rather run the clock out than score again.

Henry needs an offensive line that can get a great initial push. Alabama didn't have that in the middle of last season. Once he gets going, he's nearly impossible to take down. And he's a terror in the open field.

Like a Melvin Gordon, give him a big enough hole and he will chew up yards like crazy.

Frankly, Alabama hasn't a great run blocking line since 2012. But solid improvement is expected for 2015. And that bodes well for Henry and Drake.

The point of me posting that wasn't to show how bad we beat the shite out of Arkansas (I'm fully aware of how last year's game went), it was to rebut the OP and show that the reason he breaks for the sideline is because he's fast enough to outrun an entire defense when he's in the open field. Just because he's a big back doesn't mean he has to run people over all the time. Suck it, dumbass.

His long runs last year were off the Left side where he was pretty much untouched. I can not remember him breaking many tackles at the LOS to get into the open. He was helped quite a bit by having the threat of Sims running the ball.

He isn't afraid of contact but he doesn't have great vision. I think that's why he bounces so many runs outside.

It really is odd that someone as big as Henry has such a finesse running style. Shaun Alexander was a similar runner. I too expected him to be trucking guys left and right when Bama signed him. In high school he basically just ran through everyone because he had a ridiculous size and speed advantage. He is a better outside runner than between the tackles. He does have a great vision and is more shifty than a guy his size should be. Generally when he gets in open field, he's gone. I still remember the long run he had against Mizzou when the defender went for the strip and whiffed simply because Henry out ran it.

He's got very skinny legs for someone his size.
