True. But in a decade it will be ND again. UA is weak brand nationally

You need to leave the 1950s. Whatever jockeying takes place at the top, ND is among the least likely to supplant Bama. Fifty or sixty years ago, Notre Dame had an advantage that every damned premiere team in the country has now -- it could reach across the country because of its status as the premiere Catholic university in the U.S. Now, I can follow Hawaii in real-time without a TV and get play-by-play from a football game between Indiana and Massachusetts while watching Oregon play Arizona State on TV. The networks, the Internet, and a thousand different sports sites make any team that succeeds a national brand. When I click on ESPN or CBS Sports, there are a half-dozen front page stories about Bama and Clemson, and if I want more regional stuff, there are plenty of places I can read all about Vanderbilt football right now. Notre Dame's glory days are done. This isn't to say they won't continue to have success. They're still the premiere Catholic university in the States, and they still have a large fanbase. But they will never again exercise the advantage of sheer scope that they once had because now anybody can reach pretty much everybody. The Notre Dame mystique is gone and buried, and has been for decades now. With a few exceptions in particularly talent-rich areas -- and they're only an exception because they can be -- the top universities no longer recruit 90% of their players from a radius of a couple hundred miles.

Hey shorthorn, did Texas suck in the 70's 80's and 90's or what?

Not as bad as they do now. Of course Texas was good back then, but they don't have enough wins or hardware to be considered as the GOAT.

They are certainly GOAT of this particular Era. Other Eras/genuine all time? I'm not so sure. It's not that Saban isn't that good it's just that it's incredibly hard and disingenuous to compare different Eras of football. Too much changes for that and to be fair everyone involved in those major Eras really deserves recognition.

Fixed it. I knew I had someone missing. And it has nothing to do with game tonight, lol. Thanks for catching that.

UF and FSU are probably a tad too high when you evaluate the entirety of their programs' history and CFB history but both have done incredibly well for themselves in the Modern Era. They're pretty close to where your list places them despite both getting a rather late start on things. In fact, I'd say the Florida schools (including Miami which is maybe a spot or two too low, imo) have done the most to really break apart the old blue-blood regime and establish themselves as elite programs within the entirety of CFB.

From an objective standpoint, it's truly amazing what the Florida schools (UF, FSU, and Miami) have been able to accomplish in a short time frame.

Really though I'm nitpicking as that's a pretty damn good list.

#RBU [Rogue Booster University] is on top congrats.

The NCAA will grow claws again eventually. Like the gump generations before you enjoy it while it lasts. They'll be back and you'll be back, then they'll be back again too.

One can only hope the next NCAA president won't have a previous working relationship with the coach of a blue blood about as far from the poster boy of NCAA compliance as they come.

Yeah Auburn is definitely ahead of Oregon. The latter half of the list suffers a bit from 'recency bias.'

Hasn't really been a question since Alabama bent Notre Dame over in January of 2013.

And ND shouldn't have been in that game anyway, and it showed in the result. They were there by name only. I doubt that happens again.

And the whole idea of using national following is dumb now a days. Every school of any reputation has a national following. ND hasn't been relevant since Holtz left, and they are living off of a legacy that really isn't that great when you look at the last 50 years.

you do realize Notre Dame was the only undefeated team in the nation heading into bowl season and #1 in all the polls right? Name had nothing to do with that.

And I also know that no one thought they were that good, that they were ranked more because of name than accomplishment. And in the bowl it showed.
