Is a playoff really necessary?

It seems like outside of the top two teams there is a considerable drop off, just maybe the BCS was onto something after all.

Ohio State wouldn't have even had a shot at the NC last year if it weren't for the playoff.

This is by far more exciting, but I always thought the BCS got the right decision.

The way to fix this is...is well, more games. But these are collegiate athletes and it's not fair to wreck their bodies before the NFL so we can't do that.

Alabama, despite having one loss, is clearly head and shoulders above many teams. Clemson had a pretty easy schedule, although they did look dominant while handling it.

Were they the best team or the one who just got hot in December?

Just need to stop ranking teams until at least October.

Why? Would the final poll have been any different at the top had no one been ranked until October? No.

The BCS got it right most of the time, but the playoff is a welcome change. It's not without issue, though. Look at last year. The best team, TCU, didn't even make the playoff.

Honestly everybody knew who was going to win both of those games pretty quickly and you're right TCU didn't even get an invite last year to the dance.

I wish teams would just go to ten game seasons and have a full playoff schedule in December with the final today every year.

End conference championship games that's a dud overall anyway.

It's a nice thought, but taking games away is never going to happen because of the money involved on many levels, and it's also why an 8-team playoff isn't as likely as some think. You're talking about an NFL season now - 16 games - if you go to 8 teams. That's too much for college.

Hell, 15 is too much.

TCU would have beat Bama or Oregon, but no one was beating Ohio State last year.

I would have rather used the BCS ranking system to determine the top 4 for the current playoff system.

What was their season-ending record again?

I guess I missed where Virginia Tech was competing for a playoff spot.

In the playoff being discussed? 2-0.

The four-team playoff is better than the total glamor-fest that was the BCS but all other levels of football, from middle school to the pros, crown a true champion while the FBS plods along with a popularity contest.

The playoff needs to be expanded and the bowls should be expired. Even with just the four-team playoff, they look more ridiculous than ever.
