Don't know the details so it may just be a compromise delay to his exit, but hopefully it's a solid contract that keeps him at Ole Miss for a long time to come.

Details on the contract will be released at 2 P.M. today during a press conference on the matter.

Was he seriously asked to apologize in order to get a contract renewal? How petty is that? I mean we are talking about the future of a university, but a couple ego's need an apology?

.......waiting for AU fan reference to the UAB situation.

"My sincerest apologies for balancing the UMCC budget, facilitating unprecedented construction throughout campus, hiring the best athletic director in school history, and overseeing Ole Miss become a tier one institution."

Honestly though, I don't think there'd be so much outcry if he weren't fresh out of chemo. I have OM friends that have posted "Fire Dan Jones" petitions and spreading the word on facebook. From an outsider's perspective, it doesn't make much sense, but I'd be lying if I said I knew a detailed summary of his decision making

That's largely a vocal minority. Those are the people that are entirely consumed with "tradishuns" and don't look rationally at what he's done for the school. The vast majority of alumni realize all the good things he's done.

yeah, I haven't actually seen one since colonel reb took a back seat to colonel bear. As much as I've always liked the logo, it had to be done before the media camped out in Oxford until the change was made

Plus, from my trips to Oxford, I don't see a day where you walk across gameday and not see multiple colonel reb memorabilia at tailgate. It was a good pr move but the iconic logo will never just vanish

fwiw...there is conflicting news about if an agreement has or has not been reached.

WAPT is reporting a deal has been reached

HottyToddy.com (which...believe it or not...actually has some credibility) is reporting no deal has been reached and that it's over.

both are doing the news the wrong way.

WLBT out of Jackson and WTVA out of Tupelo are both only stating that there will be a presser at 2 regarding Dan Jones and the IHL.

That is doing the news the right way.

frick trying to be first. Try to be right.

BREAKING: IHL statement says talks with Dan Jones are over. Board will move forward with search for his replacement.

Clay Chandler @claychand

Also, this letter from Dan Jones:
quote:

Dear Ole Miss family,

Several days ago I wrote to you about the decision by the IHL Board not to renew my contract to serve as Chancellor. Last week, Dr. Jim Borsig, Commissioner-elect for the Board, approached me with a "compromise offer." The Board was willing to extend my contract for 21 months if I committed to retire in June of 2017. My performance or effectiveness up to that date would have no impact on whether I could continue to serve as Chancellor after June of 2017.

Over the last several days, Commissioner Borsig and I have continued conversations, and this week we traveled to meet individually with a number of Board members. In doing so, I hoped to determine if Board members would consider an extension that would allow me to serve as Chancellor without the outcome of my leadership predetermined. From these meetings it has become clear that the Board is not willing to do so.

I feel strongly, as do most of my advisors, that serving two years as a lame duck would make it difficult to recruit and retain key leaders and continue our momentum in private giving. More importantly, it is clear from the Board’s position that the Board would not support my leadership during any extension. For the University to thrive and succeed, the University needs a leader who has the support of its governing board, which I clearly do not enjoy. For these reasons, it is in the University’s best interest for me not to accept the Board’s offer.

I cannot sufficiently express the gratitude Lydia and I feel for the amazing outpouring of support for us personally and for our beloved University. We will leave our position in September with a deep love for this place and, most especially, the people of the Ole Miss family. Let me encourage all of you to follow closely the search process for the next Chancellor. The IHL Board will make a better decision knowing that you are engaged and that they are accountable to all constituents of the Ole Miss family.

Let me also encourage us all to follow our creed and treat Board members with civility and respect. I encourage any communication to the IHL Board members to be in that spirit. During the last few days, Commissioner Borsig has dealt with me in a candid and transparent fashion. Please remember that he was thrown into the middle of a difficult situation and was not involved in any of the decisions about my future.

My decision not to accept the Board’s offer may disappoint some of you. Please know the decision is made in the best interest of Ole Miss and out of love and respect for her. Lydia and I look forward to our last few months of service to the University and opportunities to visit with you.

Sincerely,

Dan Jones,

Chancellor

As a sports fan and a rantard, I'm 100% Gump. But as a graduate and former employee of Ole Miss, I have ties to some individuals and would defend them passionately. Dan Jones is one of those.

This fiasco is on the state government and the Institute of Higher Learning, not the university itself, so it's not really something to use to attack Ole Miss fans. It's like using that idiot Supreme Court Chief Justice in Alabama to insult the Crimson Tide. I suppose you can try to make the connection, but there's not one and most of the university is on the side of rational thought.

No, I considered it very good news and was excited about it. Unfortunately, it is what I feared.

What a sad ending.

It's all politics. Dan made the right move in not accepting the offer. I guess we'll have to see who his replacement will be.

Just going with what the man said. Of course, this also could be posturing, but that plays again into the politics argument. And the fact that there is no clear evidence that Jones did anything wrong in his time as chancellor. Along with IHL's glowing review of how things were going at UMMC 5 weeks prior to his firing. But you probably understand by now.
