I think I would anticipate that game and hate the Gumps at an equal level.

His response was that losing one game in the NFL is like going on a 6 game losing streak in the NBA and a 10 game losing streak in MLB.
and 1 loss in CFB is like losing 3 games without a playoff.

I agree, which is why I think a play off small enough that losing 1 or 2 games keeps a team out wouldn't be a problem. Unfortunately, I think you're also right about there being no way a playoff would stay that small.

The NFL regular season compares favorably to college football.

No it doesn't.
Hell, the top teams don't even play their starters the last few weeks of the year, in most cases.

College football settles it on the field every week.

Exactly, I'm not against a 4 team play off in theory, but I am against it in reality because I and everyone knows it would never stay that small.

There's a reason the regular season in college football is the best in sports.

Yes that's the main reason I don't want one. Just like NFL teams benching starters at the end of the regular season if they already have a playoff spot locked up. I can picture an Iron Bowl with the starters on the bench.

That's not exactly true. There are plenty of sports, although not nearly as popular, where the urgency of the current performance is as great or greater. My point was that college football is huge for many different reasons. A reasonable playoff setup would make the entire postseason considerably more meaningful while making a few regular season games a little less meaningful. All of the rest of what makes D-1 football unique and great would not change. Done the right way, playoffs can only improve the current game.

It would make WAY more then a few regular season games less meaningful. It would actually make the majority of games less meaningful.

The current game is as popular as it ever has been in its history.
You have it backwards. Playoffs can only hurt the game.

I disagree completely...

8 team playoff and that game still has the same importance/magnitude

2 SEC teams are not guaranteed in an 8 team playoff (although highly likely), and the winner of LSU/Bama/the west might get in with the other sec team being a 1 loss east champion.

Bottom line is that the Bama/LSU game is still a must win and neither team can just assume that game wouldn't matter and the loser would still get in.

No way does the regular season lose any luster with an 8 team playoff....

Both teams seem vastly superior to the rest of the conference. Both teams going in knowning the game isn't do or die would absolutely remove some luster.

not going to happen, especially of losing SECCG.

1 loss and undefeated SEC team would make playoffs.

Good question OP, I can also turn that around and say does not having a playoff diminish every game after the LSU/Bama game as far as the loser of that game goes? I mean think about it. Let's just say that LSU loses that game, does anyone really care about how they do the rest of the way? Do you think more people will watch another LSU game as would if they still had a chance to make it into the playoffs? I think that it would be a little bit less as important, but overall, it would be way more important in the longrun because you would have a chance to see these teams play other great teams at the end of the year and you would get to see them play more games instead of just 1 at the end of the year. Just my thoughts.

Another thing to think about is the cupcake games. I think more teams would get rid of these games if they knew it would mean more to loss to a great team than to beat an easy one. I think we would have better matchups in the regular season because of playoffs. right now no one schedules OOC games because they do not want to have that lose.

College football regular season being so exciting is a myth.

Most years 1/2 of the games LSU plays are against highly over matched opponents who have no chance at winning.

Some years many of the best teams in the SEC might only play 2-4 games against ranked opponents.(and this is the best conference in america)

How exciting is that?

and on a final note, check the NFL tv ratings and tell me a playoff limits excitement for football.
