Jesus, Dabo would be Shula 2.0.

Jim Mora and Art Briles would be on my short list.

Realistically - nobody is going to want to follow Saban. So Smart would be the easiest choice. He'll fail after 3yrs and then you can go after someone that will save the day again. Either way - the first guy will be dealing with scholarship reductions.

Could even add Kevin Sumlin to that list.

Honestly... it'll be a tough pill to swallow either way. Saban could very well be the best all-time.

If I had my choice, it would be:

1) Jon Gruden. That dude got TB over the hump and maintained an insanely good defense.

2) Mark Richt. You can laugh all you want (much like LSU fans earlier about Saban), but I feel if Richt doesn't get the job done at UGA by the time Saban leaves, he'll part ways with Georgia. He'll take a year off and get ready for his shot at a title. His tenure won't be as long or as successful as Saban's, but he could very well deliver a gap national championship, ala Gene Stallings towards the end of his career.

3) Kirby Smart. He's not my first choice, but, the guy would have spent 10 years under coach Saban and in the exact same system, recruiting the same pipelines. If Kirby can show a relentless attitude to recruiting like Saban does, than I'd be all for it.

4) Art Briles. I've never seen someone recruit Texas with less, like he does. Give him the same resources at Alabama, and who knows what could happen. My only concern is the need to be battle tested by a fanbase like ours, or, be such an a-hole that you command the respect of the fanbase.

5) Jim Mora. When he was the coach of the Falcons, I thought he was Nick Saban's clone. He was a micro-manager that got the job done to some degree, was more in tune to the younger players, and hated losing more than winning. I think he would be a great, great fit.

6) Dan Mullen. Just kidding.

The longer this goes, the more I think Kirby Smart will have a legit shot at it. Would be risky, but I'm slowly starting to come around to that possibility - Smart is probably sticking around for a good reason. I still think Alabama would ultimately go for an established head coach.

Smart is probably gone after this season, though. Texas job opens up and the coaching carousel will begin. Could be for the best for Alabama.. he goes off, gets HC experience, comes back in 3 years.

I think Mike Riley would be a good choice, but I probably like to see someone a little younger. Same thing for Art Briles.

I'm all for Kirby smart in the scenario laid out in the OP. If there's one thing the guy can do its recruit, and the talent on hand is good enough to win 10 a year with a monkey coaching. If he proves he can't coach after 4-5 years then you cut toes and hire another guy to come into a situation where the cupboard is stocked.

I think Smart at Alabama has a floor or Richt at Georgia and a ceiling of Saban at bama. The AD probably wouldn't want to take a chance of missing out on the next great HC and a guy that would stick it out for the long haul at bama. Like I said, worst case scenario the guy wins 9-10 a year and leaves a roster full of talent for the next guy. I think Kirby had earned his shot. Watch a bama game, Kirby smart coaches the defense as much or more so than nick on Saturdays and has for a while. He's one of the top recruiters in the country, I think he'd keep the train rolling and most of the people here do too, whether they want to admit it or not.

who will replace him at Alabama?

Probably Kirby Smart, but Dabo Swinney would be the best choice for you imo.

PF said today that Saban has 2 years left on the long end and will retire after this year on the short end. Love him or hate him, the bald headed bastard knows his shite when it comes to Bama and the SEC.

LOL. Folks hoping Bama gets Dabo after. If I were a fan of another SEC team I would want that, too.

Kirby needs to spend time as a head coach before he will be ready.
I have no idea who should get the job, as long as he can recruit defense and runs pro style offense. David Shaw seems like a good prospect.

Be careful what you pray for. Gonna be a package deal...Kirby the head coach, and you-know-who right down the hall. SEC gonna be fricked.

It is fascinating because Alabama has literally had lightening strike twice and landed the two best coaches of their generations.

Statistically speaking, it is HIGHLY unlikely this happens a third time.

That said, they have resources, tradition, zealots for fans and a recruiting base.

I think Bama probably steps back under any circumstance. How far back and who presides over it is the question.

I just cannot imagine them hiring someone with no HC experience getting the nod, unless he is the post Saban sacrificial lamb.

Either Kirby Smart or Jim McElwain, who is quietly turning things around at CSU.
