It is fascinating because Alabama has literally had lightening strike twice and landed the two best coaches of their generations.
The way I see it, Saban is our 4th great coach.

Either Kirby Smart or Jim McElwain, who is quietly turning things around at CSU.

If we hire McElwain, I'll take a 2 week hiatus to the Appalachian mountains to booze my sorrows away, and hopefully write a book in my drunken state that could make me enough money to do interesting things during what will surely be 3-5 seasons of garbage football.

I would agree with you that the FSU job is very good but I'd put it in the group right behind Texas, Bama, USC,.Florida, etc. The FSU job is much tougher than the Bama job too when Florida and Miami have their sh## together.

With all due respect to Auburn which has always had a very solid program, Auburn has never stopped Bama from reaching a national title winning level when Alabama has their stuff together. Florida and Miami are capable of stealing even a very strong FSU program's thunder.

If there's one thing the guy can do its recruit,

Smart is a great recruiter, but he's more of a regional guy. When Saban leaves, a lot of the national appeal to Alabama will be gone. That's not Smart's fault. It's just the way it is. Smart will still get players from AL and supplement with a few guys from GA, FL, and LA, but the talent level can't help but drop off some.

the talent on hand is good enough to win 10 a year with a monkey coaching.

People have thought this about great coaches departing before. It rarely works out that way.

I think Smart at Alabama has a floor or Richt at Georgia and a ceiling of Saban at bama.

I know y'all like Smart, but this is an extremely optimistic outlook. Saban leaving will create a sort of power vacuum, which is tough to predict. The successor could do well, but they could also fail miserably. There's no way of knowing, and a lot of it will have to do with how other programs are doing.

I'm pretty sure the 1972, 1989, 2005 and even 2010 Auburn teams disagree with that.

I'm not sure why so many Bama fans are down on Smart. He's not a guaranteed success, granted, but it would be foolish not to give him a shot after training under, and apparently meeting completely, Saban's standards. It's always nerve-wracking taking an assistant who hasn't proven his bona fides as an HC, but there's no coach in the country who knows how Saban operates and thinks better than Smart. Plenty of coaches have tried to emulate The Process, and naturally so, but there's a difference between watching it from outside and experiencing it personally from within the system. He's no Saban, granted, but what reasonable potential replacement is? It'd be foolish for Bama's administration not to give very real consideration to promoting the protege most steeped in Saban tutelage. If he doesn't work out, fine...y'all can replace him with a bigger name. But the potential payoff if he does work out cannot be blithely ignored, especially since Saban clearly trusts Smart's abilities.

AU certainly can be viewed as having impact in three of those year (72, 89, 2005) but they were one of multiple losses, not the only loss.

2010, we were pretty much out of a national title hunt by the Iron Bowl. Even a win there would not have given us a shot at the SEC title.

Yeah in 2005 and 2010 LSU pretty much ended any title hopes.

In 1989,after the Iron Bowl loss, Alabama went on to play (and lose) against Miami in the Sugar Bowl. Miami won the national championship that year.

I don't know if Bama would have won a NC in 89 had it won that Sugar Bowl.

It'll be Kirby. That's probably why Pruitt left. Kirby will only leave Bama for an elite job ala Georgia. He's in no hurry to leave and it might take a while for that type of opportunity to come up.

Not sure I agree with that. Recruits will see 3 crystal footballs and possibly 4 by next January in the trophy case alongside an arse load of other bling that is recent and not ancient history. They will see one of the best training facilities in the country. They will see how many players have gone on to play in the league. Finally and maybe most important, they will see how many guys actually leave with an education. Not sure about losing national appeal any time soon even if Saban leaves.

Sean Payton.. the Saints have maybe 2 or 3 good years left and then Brees will be on a quick downhill slide..just the way it goes with age. The way Payton has made the Saints players so unified with a loyalty team mentality (something damn rare in pro sports nowadays), his coaching abilities would turn Alabama into yet a greater offensive powerhouse And $10 million a year would probably be the offered salary.
