I have heard statemenst to the contrary. Sure he wasn't out raving about his team but he lavished a lot of pre-season praise on Johnson specifically...and Gus' forte is offense
You're looking through crimson glasses on this. He said it was Jeremy's team and he had confidence in JJ in about 100 different variations. Nothing abnormal for any other well-regarded, to-be-starter.
Now in some very private settings (not large AU clubs, for example) he expressed a lot of confidence in the team in general. Not JJ specifically, but the year overall.

How did the entire country completely whiff on them?
The hiring of Muschamp, plus the buzz out of camp even going back to last season on Johnson at QB. Gus's QBs have almost always put up solid numbers, so with that buzz around Johnson, everyone figured that offense would just keep rolling along, and the addition of Mushchamp would shore up a really bad defense. Neither have come to fruition, plus they've had some key injuries.

I have Auburn winning the SEC.

Yeah I don't remember ghat either. It's seems to be a common narrative among them. The media was all over Johnson, but don't remember any outlandish praise from Gus about Johnson.

Gus made a few general comments that most coaches make about their new QB, and Auburn fans and some media ran with it. Even going back to last pre-season there was some talk with some Auburn fans on Johnson unseating Marshall at QB.

He really did....That's the thing...he really talked up this team, Johnson, Boom etc. and then has woefully under-delivered.
Given his buy-out I can't imagine they would fire him this season him after the Chizik debacle. It's pretty unthinkable.
He did not. He said normal coach speak things that only homer fans take as gospel. "We have talent on this team." (There is actually talent on this team.) "We are young." (This team has some key areas with inexperience namely O skill positions and DB's.) "We might struggle early but if we can survive we have a chance to be special." (We have struggled, my guess is much worse than he believed and we didn't survive so we no longer have a chance to be special.)
Bottom line is everyone coaches, players, pundits from ESPN who normally hate on Auburn literally everyone expected more from JJ. If he plays to half of the expectations we are likely 4-1 with a 10 point loss on the road at Death Valley. This weeping and gnashing of teeth wouldn't be going on, etc...He hasn't and we don't have anyone in the wings that can do what we need to do to make the offense run. Water is wet and it is hard to win in CFB without reasonable QB play. It is fair to say in Gus' O it is more important than in O's like Bama or UGA. But ask Bama post Ole Miss or UGA now if it is hard to win without decent QB play.
Everyone knew the D was going to struggle. Losing Carl hurts, but we still would have had issues with him. He increase the chance of getting off the field in 3rd and long though which is a major issue for this team.

-2.5 against Kentucky is as good as being an underdog IMO. This is a team that was in a NC and now they're barely a pick against one of the worst teams in the conference? C'mon.
Sure orange is the same as red and if you bet on Awbin and they win by one, I'm sure your bookie will still pay you, it's almost the same.
Must be the buckeye in ya

Could be, but I sort of expect that we'll either win or lose in a close, mediocre fashion that doesn't show any sign of significant decline or improvement, and we'll be saying the same shite about the Arky game.
Very likely especially since it looks like it will be some kind of two QB set and we don't seem to have confidence in either QB at this point. Expecting more very conservative play calling tonight which will at a minimum keep it close.

What causes Auburn to go so up and down in the SEC? The highs are high and the lows are low

And in fairness to us, Johnson looked good, seemed poise, and I saw plenty of Alabama and LSU posters on this site talking about their high expectations for Johnson during the summer.

Thanks what Arkansas was saying about Auburn! Boy we both need a win!

What have you seen from arkie that makes you think they can curb stomp anyone? They certainly might beat Auburn, and it may indeed be a curb stomping but they really haven't shown enough to elicit such a confident response as you posted.

If that is true then Malzhan needs to take a play from the old Bear Bryant playbook. He would always downplay his teams in the pre-season. Saban does the same thing to a lesser degree
Slow Southern Drawl voice filtered through whiskey and un-filtered Chesterfields: "Weeeellll......I dunno.....we gotta find us some football players.....dunno if our boys can beat 'dem boys.....hell, we'll be lucky to win a few games this a'year..."

I'm glad an Aubie finally admitted it.
Bookmarked.
