You also could call it "bowl era football" because the bowls mattered. Lots of times, up to three bowl games had national championship implications. Bama got screwed over during a couple of those years but that would be so much harder for the AP to get away with in the social media age. I didn't watch one single bowl game outside of the playoff games last year. Hell, Georgia decided not to even play in theirs.

It never hurt my feelings to see split titles. I hate the playoffs even though my team has made it each year. I accepted the BCS but never liked it even though my team benefited from in 2011. I enjoyed college football as a whole a lot more during the 80's and 90's than I do now. Bama only won one title during that span but college football was more enjoyable as a whole.

Respectfully disagree.

The 2004 season and what they did to Auburn changed everything and we can never go back there again.

Auburn got robbed. That was complete collusion.

I agree.

I even miss the old bowl tie in system. The 2 "best" rarely played but the arguments over who was better will last forever.

To me that's even better.

You miss not having to earn a title?

USC and OU started the year 1 and 2 and both went undefeated and for the most part looked outstanding doing it. What collusion was at hand? It would look more suspect to bump one of them for au.

Not wanting to see the two best teams play each is moronic

I do to really. I know a playoff is no doubt the most definite way to determine a champion but I still think college football has lost something in doing so.

Of course it don't matter what I think, they ain't going back and more changes are coming down the road. There is no telling what direction things will go once the streaming companies get involved which is coming.

bowl era stunk, what sense does it make to have the top 3 or 4 teams in the country all playing different bowl games? There's no finality or attempt to truly crown the best.

BCS era had the right idea (and ftr got it right pretty much every time), and the playoffs have furthered that. My biggest gripe is I think we should keep a BCS style system (whatever formula or whatever would be involved with that) then take the top 4. I DO appreciate that humans with brains are involved so some measure of common sense can come into play, but humans are also prone to bias.

All the major bowls had interest. Now it's only like 2. Maybe even 1. The semis are usually trash.

I mean there was more to it than just the 2004 season and what they did to Auburn.

There was 85, I think it was, when BYU beat a 6-5 Michigan team in the Holiday Bowl for a National Title. That was the year the whole debate really started.

I remember 2006 being another shite show of a year.even though I thought Florida deserved the title remember all the BS about Michigan vs OSU and SoCal vs UCLA.

98 and I didn’t think FSU deserved the shot at Tennessee, I thought it should have been OSU and I hate the suckeyes.

99 ... think about it. Va Tech and Nebraska both got shut out of the process. FSU was basically gifted the title.

Sooooooooooo many reasons why the old bowl system sucked. Far too many split national championships and, even then, there were times when teams like the 64 Arkansas squad for instance just got fricked all together.

Yeah, let's go back to the days when #1 has to play #5 in #5's home stadium.

This is nostalgia at its finest. It's sitting on a rocking chair, reminiscing about the good ole days.

The old system sucked. The new one isn't perfect, either.

I think you'll see Bowls relegated NIT status, sooner rather than later. I also think that we'll go to an 8 team playoff, and do away with conference title games.

While different, its certainly better than having biased pollsters determine who wins a friggin championship. My lord, that was a silly time.

I think the BCS for the most part got it right. If we're being honest there were only what, 3 years out of 16 that there was a legitimate controversy over who got left out?

The fact is there are very, very rarely more than 2 truly elite teams in CFB and sometimes there's only one. We've seen that over and over again with the blowouts in the semifinals and it's only going to get worse when they expand the playoffs.

agree with all of this. 4 is perfect and it's really irritating that it's only a matter of time before we go to 8. That's going to really suck.

8 teams will ruin college football. 4 has already hurt it.

I think it's "hurt" it in the sense that teams no longer GAF about bowl games, which does suck to see as a fan but ultimatley they don't really MATTER much in the grand scheme of things.

But yes I agree 8 will be disastrous. It's pointless and unncessary, and I give it about 3-4 years before teams finish 9th start crying about them being left out and talks to expand start up again.
