Is the blame for Tennessee's demise placed solely on the shoulders of Dooley?
It seems a majority of tennersee fans want to blame dooley but there was nobody else willing to take that job then. They should thank him.

No that's just what our AD told us when we reacted poorly to the hire.

Just curious, why do so many people think that Tennessee won't ever be back? I know it's been a little while, and we more than likely have a few more rebuilding years, but within the next few years it's hard to not see us settling down and at least being more respectable (8-4ish.) With any luck I see us being contenders for championships in 2 or 3 years. Just wanted to know some honest perspectives from people that say Tennessee is dead and not coming back.

Having lived up there (or thurr, as they say it), I'd say they're a Bama / Virginia Tech hybrid.
They have the powerful history, the big stadium, the legion of uneducated, diehard white trash fans and the self-image as football's kings that Bama has, but they share the appalachian location and culture of Virginia Tech, along with the isolation from the rest of the world VT has, which is brought about by being up there in them hills and hollers by themselves.
The thing that most surprised me when I lived in NE Tenn was just HOW fervent and unanimous Vol fandom is up there. Tennessee football isn't a big thing in the mind of someone, who like me, grew up in Texas. I knew of them, I knew them as an SEC team and former national power. I knew about Manning. Up there though, they are THE thing. The only thing. They are Jesus to the residents of NE Tennessee. Worshipped. In Texas, The University of Texas, although they are the bandwagon team of the state, doesn't have 1/4 of the level of support Tennessee has. Not that kind of life-dedication among ALL the residents.

The orange, though!!! The horrible orange!!! It's oranger than orange!!! It's like the spawn of orange and a japanese pop girl group!!! It burns and stings and soothes all at once!!! How can someone put that horrible color on their body and keep a straight face?
If they came up with that color to mimick the sunset on old rocky top, they failed miserably. It only reminds people of a creamsicle push-up, or a rubber chicken thats sat in the back glass of an 82 mercury in the middle of summer too long.
dont ask how I know that...

They got cocky after 98 title and LSU beat them in 01 sec championship game preventing them to play Miami in title game at Rose Bowl.

It's an LSU forum. Most of the people here need to believe teams can never be at the same level they were at in the 90's.

Significantly more intelligent, better looking, and less inbred than the Alabama fanbase.

Way to narrow it down to about 99 percent of the population.

All good answers. How would you describe them when they were winning?
When they were winning they were unbearable.
I actually had to severe ties with a couple of UT friends because they were such assholes.
They used to call their October schedule, "winkin', blinkin' and nod."
UT fans showed no respect to anyone. They hated UF, loathed Bama (but yeah, they did respect them, still do), and constantly claimed UGA was cheating. They butt raped the state of SC (recruiting) and laughed in the process.
I used to couldn't stand them.
But they are a humbled lot now. I'm really hoping they have seen the error of their ways and they'll be less obnoxious if they ever start winning big again.

Tennessee is the Notre Dame of the SEC. Still resting on the laurels of yesteryear.

Scrooster - I've always been humble but then I'm a highly edumucated Appalachian who rejects categorization of not only myself but what this area is. Why, o, why did faux hillbilly marketing have to take off in the 40s through forever.
However, what you hated us for was what most hate us for - we won back then. We've always been polite as it's a part of our culture to be but we've always been proud and are even now because that too is a part of our culture. The ole Appalachian philosophy of "I ain't better than anyone but ain't anyone better than me" is still very much alive here - that's one of the things that informed our actions during the war, why we were union and abolitionists. But it's also why we'll throw punches at anyone demeaning us and state what we're proud of and we still have a great deal to be proud of.
We were unlike the rest of the south, unlike the rest of our state, we were unvanquished, unbent, by the war. When our homes turned to ash at the hands of confederates - we smiled in their faces, gave our last bit of food to the union, and marched with Sherman. We may not win a physical battle but you can be damn sure that we refuse to give the victor the full joy of victory by bowing us.
That's just this areas culture and everyone raised here - black, white, latino, asian etc. - has a bit of that in them.

The colors came from these
LINK
quote:
The school colors of orange & white date to April 12,1889, when Charles Moore, president of the University's athletic association, chose the colors for the first field day. His inspiration came from the orange and white daisies which grew profusely on the Hill. In 1891, students again wore orange and white to the Sewanee football game. In 1892 students endorsed the colors at a special meeting called for the purpose, but two years later were dissatisfied with the choice and voted to drop the colors. After a heated one-day debate no other colors proved satisfactory, so the students returned to orange and white.
