I would say the Kiffin hire, and his sudden departure did it. The fact that Dooley was the coach hired after that dumpster fire gives a pretty good indication of how bad the state of affairs in Knoxville were post LK.

To add to this, they are a little more insulated from other fan bases. This means they are less exposed to opposing points of view and have no one to make fun of their team and fans on a day-to-day basis. There's more co-mingling of fans of UGA, AU, Alabama, etc. so we're more aware of each other and our respective shortcomings.
They're kind of like a hybrid of Alabama and VT fans.

As a Vandy fan who experienced their worst behavior when things were going well - let me just say it couldn't happen to a better bunch of buttchuggers. My 3 trips to Knoxville were the worst of any of my SEC trips as a visiting team. I don't think Butch is the answer and I hope I'm right. They've had a lot of great recruits in the past who never saw the field on a Saturday.
