You snapped a 28-game winning streak. Great defensive game by the Bulldogs that year.

We've also had some heart-breakers against #1, like the Stoernover and '69 GOTC. My favorite win over a #1 was probably our 42-11 win over Texas in 1981.

I know when Tubs was HC i would feel more comfortable going against the #1 team in the nation, than I would going against a unranked opponent

The more I hear you guys talk about Tubs, the more he sounds like the Nuttster.

Somebody from Bama posted these results for all teams this past week, I believe. If I recall correctly, he was surprised to learn that, since Spurrier came to SC, we have the highest winning percentage against top 25 opponents out of all SEC teams.

All I know is if you are playing against Bama it is better for the Tide to be #1 than #2. #1 we might beat ourselves , #2 and it is game over.

Want a real laugh, look up their record against top 5, or top 10.
I'm drunk now, but will try and do a quick search. I think they have 1(maybe 2) wins against top 5.
Eta: 1-27 against top 5, after 2010 season.

3 wins over #1 ranked teams.

1998: #10 Texas A&M 36, #1 Kansas State 33 (2OT)

The game that broke Kansas State's program. They, as a program, still have never had fewer than 2 losses in a season, as they followed up the Big 12 title game loss with a loss to Purdue in the Alamo Bowl (Drew Brees)

2002: Texas A&M 30, #1 Oklahoma 26

Reggie McNeal's coming out party. Wasn't enough to save R.C. Chokum's job.

2012: #15 Texas A&M 29, #1 Alabama 24

The game that won Johnny Manziel the Heisman.

Record vs. Number 1: 4-9 (.307)

Wins:

1942 - Georgia (27-13)
1994 - Florida (36-33)
2001 - Florida (23-20)
2013 - Bama (34-28)

Losses:

4 of the losses are to Bama (1961,1973,1979,2008). 2 losses are to Georgia (1980,1982). 1 loss to LSU (2011). 1 Loss to Florida (1996). 1 loss to FSU (2014) (2013 season BCS Championship game)

Record as Number 1: 4-2 (.666)

Wins:

1957 - Bama (40-0)
1958 - Kentucky (8-0)
1985 - Southern Miss (29-18)
2011 - Oregon (22-19) (2010 season BCS Championship Game)

Losses:

1984 - Miami (18-20)
1985 - Tennessee (20-38)

Trying to find exact records against teams ranked in top ten at the time Auburn played them. I know the win percentage was phenomenal under Tubberville but would like to know full history.

Seriously?

KState has 8 10+ win seasons in its programs history. 6 have been post 1998 and 5 of those seasons have been 11 wins. They've won 2 conference titles since 2000 and been to 2 BCS games.

In that same time frame, aTm has had one season with 10+ wins and no BCS bowl games...

aTm didn't "break" anything...

Thanks...and ouch that number is waaaaaay lower than I thought it would be, especially during the Tubs years.

It seemed like when Tubs was at Auburn that is all they talked about during every game, how good his teams were against highly ranked opposition.

Ahhh, see part of the problem, you started your search a year too early. 1998 was the year Bowden was fired during the season and Bill Oliver coached the last 5 games of the year.

After Tubs became established and while he gave a damn they were phenomenal and I do believe had the best record in all of college football for several years against top ten teams.

I ran each year individually (1999-2008):

0-5 first 2 years (1999-2000) playing with Bowden's recruits.

Once the majority of the players were his own they started kicking arse: 14-4 against top 10 from 2001-2006.

Then when he gave no fricks at the end: 1-4 from 2007-2008.

Actual overall record for Tubs was 15-14 with 14 wins coming in just a 6 year span.

1. They lost both.

2. They've never had a season in their history with fewer than 2 losses.

3. Each time they became number 1 in the country, their season was broken by a loss to a Texas school. In each of those seasons, they were embarrassed in their bowl game.

The 1998 season was the last opportunity they will have to compete for a title. Everything fell into place for them to play in the inaugural BCS title game (including Miami beating UCLA in a make up game) and they CHOKED, blowing a 15 point 4th quarter lead to an A&M team on their backup QB due to McCown breaking his collarbone the game before.

And yet they've still won more than TAMU during that span.
