Hell, half the time the evaluations rely on offer lists, which rely on coaching staffs and not the sportswriters.

If you're a Mentat, then you ought to be on Auburn's staff.

"Experts" have said for decades that recruiting is the lifeblood of college football, and they say it for a reason.

Good recruiting doesn't guarantee titles, but none are won without it.

But what about teams that place 3rd 4th 5th at the end of the year

Obviously cumlative rankings are whats most important.Bama finished #1 in '12
#1 in '13 #1 in '14 and #2 in '15.

None of the other schools you named comes close to those type of rankings. LSU is maybe 2nd on a cumlative ranking but still not even close.

Well the players you recruit make up your roster...

So I'd say it is pretty important

Recruiting is necessary but not sufficient for success. I'll let you put that together.

The players you recruit, mold and coach make up your roster. Just ask Missouri.

Also, recruiting isn't just about identifying the best talent.

Talent is necessary. Coaching is too. Talent gives a chance, coaching allows you to win.

You can be the greatest coach in the world, but if the other team has WRs and RBs that are .2 faster than your fastest guys on defense, it's probably not going to matter that much.

Actually I think Mizzou is the perfect example of the kind of glass ceiling your program has when it can't get top tier talent. Michigan St. is another good example.

I'm beginning to finally think that recruiting is secondary now

Look at LSU, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida who continuously over the years especially lately get the 4 and 5 star recruits and continue to flop. I think the Vols and Gators will return to their earlier prominence and Georgia and LSU problems are coaching.

Heck, at Mizzou we will give a parade if we sign a 4 or 5 star recruit.

Do you not think Bama's is bringing in the best talent every year?

Hell, Saban is also obsessed with roster mgt.

Of course he is, but he's not relying on an online recruiting analyst's opinion on anything. I'm not saying these guys are completely clueless. But they're amateur compared to most top university evaluators.Otherwise, they'd be making 4-5x the salary with an off field role, and not have to deal with lunatics on a message board.

Obviously a huge amount. It's why the SEC has only been won by the Big Six since 1976 has won an SEC title. Clear implication that recruiting matters. However; without good coaching, it really means nothing. Good coaching and good recruiting are absolute necessities to win this conference. Unless your name is Gene Chizik.

There exists a significant and meaningful difference between necessary condition and sufficient condition.

Jimbo Fischer said it best "You can't win the Kentucky Derby with a donkey"

Getting talented players is a must. It's impossible to compete at a high level without a lot of talent.

But if you don't have the right coach and program, the talent largely goes to waste.

Top 5-10 Recruiting Classes are very important but it's vital that these players are still on the Roster in 2-3 or 4 years.

So,what you do with the Recruiting Classes is equally important.

Recruiting AND roster mgt are 75% of the game if you want to be a top tier team that contends for championships year in and year out.
