In what year did the NCAA overtake the NIT as being the more prominent of the two? Lots of folks just assume the NCAA has always been the big dog but that's not the case.

I'm going to say 1953. The point shaving scandals whether all acused were guily or all allegations were as severe as alledged, New York City basketball was off limits for many schools and the appeal of the NIT went by the wayside.
Even though the NIT remained a viable tournament,no SEC team played in it again until 1969.

Charles Barkley supposedly is recruiting for us in the ATL area. Probably against the rules but it is Sir Charles
Any reason Sir Charles refused to recruit for Auburn prior to Bruce Pearl? Seems Barbee could have used a little help.

I think Sir Charles has an exemption.

Point shaving scandal started with the mob in the east coast. The rise of the NCAA was mostly the result of Rupp refusing to ever take a team back to NYC / Madison Garden. He gave the NCAA the backbone needed to shift from the NIT to the NCAA. Pretty sure Rupp was true to his word and never coached a team playing in MSG after that.

Cheer up. UGA is in elite territory in basketball. Only 2 SEC schools have sent their men and women to the final Four in the same year. LSU also. Think Louisville, UCONN and UNC are the others.
And for the OP, 9 for LSU, most recently in 2006. And the lone Sweet16/Final Four in 2011 for VCU. Came close in 03 or 04. Beat Duke in the 1st round and nearly beat Pitt in the second round. Yes I know horse shoes and hand grenades.

So does Duke.
Duke is the exception and not even close to the norm. They could also build a 20,000 seat arena and fill it with ease if they wanted.

Gonzaga plays in a 6k gym. Wich St plays in a 10,5k gym. Stanford plays in a 7k gym. Baylor plays in a 10,2 k gym.
The size of the Auburn Arena will not be a reason why AU cannot be good again at basketball.
