Until 1975, winning the SEC or being the SEC's representative put a team in "the Sweet 16."

Did you make this thread honestly expecting anyone to be close to Kentucky?

Only 22-24 (depending on teams or year) teams through 1973-1974.SEC winner (or representative) would go on to the then Mideast Regional and face the winner of a game between an independent vs a MAC or Ohio Valley team. Same for Big 10. Their winner would go on to the Mideast and face the winner of an independent vs a MAC or Ohio Valley team. For instance in 1974 Marquette played Ohio U and Notre Dame played Austin Peay in the first round of the NCAA tournament on the same day that major conferences concluded their regular season or tournament in the case of the ACC.

It's because there were only 16 teams in the entire tournament.

Good info
Fortunately no one has to be tortured enduring the dreaded "Regional Consolation" game. A little over 40 yrs ago I still remember as a 6th grader sitting in Memorial Coliseum in Tuscaloosa watching Notre Dame destroy Vanderbilt 118-88 in the consolation game.
That thing ended one year later.
