re: How good of a coach was Johnny Vaught?

Those names, haven't thought about them in years.

Back then I used to read that one and Auburn quite a bit. We were not posting from positions of strength in this days hahaha. Those were not easy days to be a Bammer.

Yea it was rough that's for sure. But after that seven year streak those Volquest Pukes were so sure we were a dead and buried program. There's been a lotta hardware collected in Tuscaloosa since then though. Take it easy man I'll see you around TD.

Pat Dye is above Fulmer imho. Dye also never had the luxury of a BCS system to win a NC or he would have won one or two of them. Dye pretty much dominated the 80's in the conference. Fulmer is top ten though definitely.

btw, seems to me you have Dooley a bit high.

I know, he won a NC with Herschel, but I don't recall him as quite the consistent force that some of the others were.

Vaught was a great coach and a good man....I was in the first class to live in the new Vaught Hall back when they had athletic dorms.

Much easier to win the SEC back then than it is today.

Johnny Vaught was a great coach. It was OM that Bryant had to overthrow when he returned to Bama, not UT, LSU, etc. He won 6 titles between 47-63. He had a nice 6-4 record in major bowls, he and Butts the only coaches besides the 3 at Alabama with a winning record. In the 12 years between 52-63 he had 9 top 10 AP finishes and one 11, including 8 top 7s. Beginning in '57: 7, 11, 2, 2, 3, 5, 7.

Notes:
(1) After 1936, when AP began, only counting wire service NCs (AP, UP/Coaches polls). So did not count Bama in 41 - bogus, 45 or 66; UT in 51; OM in 60, 62, etc.

(3) All of the numbers. e.g.,NCs, Win %, etc., are while at an SEC school.
(4) Neyland was at UT 7 years prior to SEC - those years not counted.
(5) Thomas was at Alabama 2 years prior to SEC - those years not counted.
(6) Didn't think anyone else did enough to be listed. Only Majors won more than 2 SECCs (3) and he didn't seem to fit. Actually Butts was a stretch because of his winning % - a full 10% less than the next lowest. But he won 4 SEC titles and was 4-1 in major bowls. Miles and Dodd were considered but only won 2 titles.
(7) Alabama has 3 of the 5 coaches who have a winning % above 80; and 3 of the 4 coaches who have a winning record in major bowl games.
(8) LSU has no coach on the list, but IMO, they are now the number 2 SEC program of all time, not UT.

He was one of the best coaches at paying players in the history of football. top 5 for that.

True, Bear leads by one game. But from 1944-65 Bama and Ole Miss did not play each other in the regular season. Personally the two probably just had a gentleman's agreement not to play one another. It was a lot different back then.

It does if you hire a string of bad coaches to replace a great coach (Kindard, Cooper, Sloan). Take Alabama as an example. They corrected their mistake after DuBose and then followed up the Shula experiment with little Nicky. Had they kept either of those two, their program wouldn't be in nowhere near the shape it is in now.
