Fitch said he plans to give an update on his Spence idea hopefully before August. He has actually had some communication and interest from some university folks.

I know this thread is mainly about sports renovations, but the Million Dollar Band here at Alabama is currently undergoing a major renovation of their band field, with a new band building being built within the next few years.

The current field, Butler Field has gone from this:

To this:

As you can see, it is an almost exact replica of Bryant-Denny, and will be ready just in time for Band Camp and football season. In addition a new observation tower will be built along with a new parking deck and Band hall (they probably won't start construction on those until after the Joe is finished, which is right across the street from Butler).

I have a feeling that there's going to be some weddings held on there.

That's pretty nice. LSU built their band hall several years back and its really nice. It has an observational tower as well. I dont think their marked their field off like Tiger Stadium though. That's actually a great idea.

Grass wear and tear is bound to happen with any band, but when we went to A&M last year we practiced at LSU's band field the friday before. I was really impressed by their band hall.

Butler turned out to be a LOT nicer than I thought it was going to be, and I can't wait to see what the band room is going to look like.

It's nice for sure, and I'm glad to see your band is getting a band hall. About time.

Do you know if your practice field will have lights? That's something TGBFTL's field needs. Turf would prolly be nice, too. I question whether it would be hotter to practice on though....

Well we DID have practice lights with the old field. I didn't see them in the new picture but I imagine they had to move them because of construction. Since we often practice at night during band camp and the season I imagine they'll be put up back soon. I'm surprised TGBFTL doesn't have any lights on their field. That seems important.

According to our band director the company that installed the turf also put in a draining and cooling system to keep the field cooler. You can't tell from the picture but the field has been raised tremendously so I guess they did install it. I'm not sure how cool it will keep the field. Probably a few degrees.

They use the indoor practice facility at night...

Hmm, thanks. That might be worth looking into then.

Probably a good thing. The band practice facility borders some rough areas. I wouldn't want to be out there at night either.

Butler Field, the Million Dollar Band's practice field, just got renovated. Should open sometime in July. Also building a 4 story parking deck for the music center and band students.

This is how it use to look. It looked bad ....

And this is how it looks now....

Alabama’s Million Dollar Band Will Soon Have a Better Practice Field Than Some College Football Teams

Butler Field, which sits catty-corner from Sewell-Thomas Stadium between University Boulevard and Paul W. Bryant Drive, will soon feature a full-size, artificial turf football field that is even painted to reflect the look inside Bryant-Denny Stadium on gamedays.

The project began earlier this year as part of a plan to improve the band’s practice area, which was an unlevel grass field prone to holding water after heavy rains. The project also includes a parking four-story parking deck that will go up in place of the adjacent commuter lot. LINK
