The popularity of SEC football may help the University of Houston, a member of the American Athletic Conference, become an expansion member of the Big 12.

Houston athletic director Hunter Yurachek has expressed his concerns about the city of Houston becoming SEC country. He feels the presence of nearby league member Texas A&M, of LSU which has a huge alumni following in Houston and the 24-hour-a day SEC Network that gives all 14 members exposure is working in the SEC's favor.

Yurachek's observation was backed recently by Mark Berman, sports director of KRIV FOX 26 in Houston. He recently tweeted a graphic of the city's 20 most watched college football TV games in 2015, and 50 percent of the telecasts featured SEC teams.

The University of Texas is probably more to blame for this than anyone. Financially, they would have been better off in the long run if they would have focused on helping the Big 12 improve instead of being greedy & starting their own network. Its the reason TA&M became a member of the SEC.

It says something about how bad the AAC is that people are tempted to move to the Big 12 from it.

I forgot the details, but somehow Texas gets a bigger percentage of the conference payout every year right? Is that because they have their own network? I will have to search it, but I know the Longhorn network isn't all that successful, which probably contributes to two factors.

1. Being an average team doesn't bring in as much money.

2. It doesn't really help ratings when you have a 24 hr a day network that revolves around one school. It sort of limits the content that it can show.

Half the top ten most watched games in Houston involved Alabama. Hmmm.

Just imagine how much more skewed it would have been if Houston didn't have an amazing season this past year.

With unaffiliated fans, the SEC is more popular than the Big 12

A&M is the largest alumni base in Houston. LSU has a huge presence as well and every SECW school has at least some level of representation

Big 12 fans in Houston like watching the SEC, especially our former rivals, because they don't like it

OK State vs Baylor on fox had a larger audience than UT vs ND on NBC.

Wow. That says a lot about sip fans.

It's a great thing that Houston is being added so strongly to the SEC foothold. I hope it can become a city that eventually hosts some SEC events like Tournaments and Championship games.

Atlanta and Birmingham do provide a bit of an advantage to East teams, and the teams in Alabama. This could balance things a bit geographically for the fans.

Houston, Memphis & UCF are NOT getting asked to join the Big XII. First off they are all commuter schools. Second, all three are in cities that are already saturated with college football. I don't even have to look at the Sunday Orlando Sentinel to know which schools are getting the most coverage. The Big XII are going to ask BYU and Colorado State to join. Both are basically open markets with little competition with some history and potential.

Seriously who beside Texas would Houstonians want to watch play in the Big12?

Tons of SEC engineers in Houston as well.

Sorry but A Kansas vs Ok St game or Baylor vs Tx Tech just doesnt appeal as much as an Arkansas vs Ole Miss or South Carolina vs Mississippi State

There's a good amount of Baylor, Tech, OU and TCU alumni in Houston and a decent amount of oSu alumni, but their DFW numbers are definitely larger for all schools. I would be interested to see the total size of the SECW alumni bases in Houston vs the total size of basically the Big 12 South schools (UT, OU, oSu, TCU, Tech, Baylor).
