I had completely forgotten about Matt Jones. He was really my first favorite player at Arkansas. I barely remember hearing about Clint Stoerner and i don't even remember who was qb between those two guys. I wanted Matt Jones to do good so bad at Jacksonville. Lol, I guess going by the way they tell it he and Ryan Mallett could have snorted enough coke to kill a bevo with Mallett trying to play keep up.

Why do you ask? Arky boosters are looking around for Bert's successor, are they?

Ole Miss fans were excited to get a coach with a successful predigree. Things looked bleak after Coach O, and Nutt brought some life back into the program.

Two Cotton Bowl trips injected energy back into the program, though Nutt eroded some of it during his painful last two years. It set the stage for Freeze to come in and get the program rolling in the right direction.

This is less a sports question and more a rant question but what was it like on here when HDN left arkansas for ole miss? Did the black bears think it was some kind of coup? Were they woopin it up? I don't even remember why he left. Some insight into that would be cool to. Definitely seems like a lateral or even a downgrade move going there, to me.

the Black Bears were all in and many ranters jumped on their bandwagon telling us poor hogs how stupid we were for letting him go. They (black bear and other sec fans) were comparing him to Saban with less talent to work with. That was when I realized that most "fans" on this board have never played a down of football but think that the team they pull for some how increases their football knowledge with their number of wins each year, but amazingly their football knowledge never decreases with less wins???? funny how that works

Yea, that's funny since Nutt was more the innovator type and Saban mostly beats you down with talent.

HDN was pissed off at the the AR higher ups and they were pissed at him as well.

If I remember correctly they basically made him him hire Malzahn to get Mitch Mustain. I don't think HDN ever wanted MM or Gus. HDN made Malzahn run his (HDN's) offense and the two completely butted heads over the whole thing. I think it was the Springdale contingent that exposed the whole HDN textgate.

That ran him out of town. I believe that contingent even had planes flying over the stadium with stuff about HDN during the games.

yup, it was mitch plus some fellow teammates altho mitch was the true prize and gus knew exactly what he was getting in to when he took the job. other than those additions, you're spot on.

it was a MISERABLE time to be a hog fan.

Arkansas as a program wasted 15 years with Nutt and Petrino.

Decent success...but building nothing. Nutt got lucky to land a couple of unusually good in state players in MJones and McFadden. By the time Mustain was the shite diggety 5 star recruit he was calling Nutt a dork in print. Nutt was still forced to hire him and along came Gus.

The rest got ugly. Gus didn't really do anything wrong other than suck up to some boosters and weasle a job where he wasn't wanted. Nutt and his entire staff were clowns.

That led to Petrino...which was predictable...flaming success followed shortly by flames (although the motorcycle didn't burn).

Another year of total tomfoolery with Petrino's idiot sidekick John L Smith (sadly...hogs were actually picked by many to contend for a NC given the BCS performance the year before the wreck). John L. was picked to really try to change as little as possible and let the kids run the team...which they did. 4-8 resulted.

Finally hired a coach and the mess is ALMOST cleaned up. Hogs are a year and one more recruiting class away, but nobody wants to play them this year.

Ole Miss is irrelevant, regardless of who they hire as a coach. They either enjoy mediocrity or welcome probation from the violations. Latter soon to come one could suspect...although signs of mediocrity are showing up.
