I love when Ranters think they have figured out how to defend the spread while D. Coordinators still haven't.

Drew Brees, for one was a spread quarterback at Purdue
Didn't Jeff Tedford run a lot of spread-concepts at Cal?

I would say that the best defense for this type of offense is to analyze tendencies. Every O-Coordinator has their go-to on particular down and distance, so as a D-Coordinator you have to coach up your defense to anticipate plays and recognize offensive personnel placement on the field.
These offenses don't have a wide variety of offensive plays - they have a few looks but as I watched a few teams play this year, it became very apparent what their offense was going to do in certain down 'n distance situations.
The key to defending these offenses is to recognize the tendancies and reduce the amount of options they have at their disposal when they get to the redzone. Over time, these offenses become very predicatable and seasoned/smart defensive players can slow them down.

I love ranters who think the spread and the HUNH are the same thing.

The sensible thing is adopt the nfl method, not allowing the play to be snapped until all the officials are in place. College adopted the play clock change but failed to adopt the rest of the rules. Personally i think at least fbs should adopt the nfl sideline communications procedures as well, helmet radios in the qb and mlb helmets, that cut off during the last 15 seconds of the clock.

I think Saban tried to have that discussion for the last couple of years, and all folks chose to do was throw crap at him about the safety issues. He asked if this what we want football to become? And it looks like he assumed it is indeed what folks want football to become so he hired a guy to change his offense and speed up Bama's game as well.

Very true. Saban adapted well and will continue to adapt. Bama will be fine and will prosper as long as Saban is at the helm. Bama has recruited premo run stuffers and gap fillers. Saban will now recruit more athletic and leaner linebackers and edge rushers. It is already happening. I have talked some smack but I think I see what you guys were saying when you said this years Bama team overachieved. You can already see the personnel changing. I'm not trying to dickride, its just really impressive how hard he coaches year round.

Yes. The HUNH with the intent to keep the defense from subbing is a little crooked IMO, which is why Auburn has embraced it so fervently.
Excellent post!

I actually have less of a problem with how Oregon runs it as compared to others.
At least Oregon's players are running back to the line even from downfield, and they snap the ball as soon as they get lined up.
Unlike others who run to the ball, to just keep the defense from subbing , then check with me for 15-20 secs before running a play .
Oregon's way at least seems like it is part of their offensive scheme, while they other way is just a way to keep teams from subbing.

I think the biggest problems defenses run into against the HUNH is that they are reactive. They put in 5 WRs let's put in 6 dbs.
They put in 5 Wrs so go 2 DTs, 2 DEs a LB and cover with 6 and make sure the 2 primary WRs don't get off clean. Mix it up if you need to use 6 to get pressure and still contain the QB use 6 but make sure the primary wr doesn't get off clean and the QB doesn't have time to get to his 3rd + read.
Then it's a roulette wheel, will you sack the QB before he finds the open WR, sometimes he will sometimes he won't, and you'll be in a much better position to mix up coverages when a QB KNOWS he's going to get smoked every play and starts making premature throws.
Will you give up a few big plays yes, but you'll easily balance it out with some quick 3 and outs, 3 and 20's and INTs. Break but don't bend, don't give up free yardage until they hit the red zone. Attack and hope you get them before they burn you.

He ran a pro style offense at NC State and Wisconsin.
But Nick Foles ran a spread at Arizona and he's been playing pretty damn well in the pros under Chip Kelly.

SEC weakness is that players have become too large to keep up with HUNH, thus becoming more tired
Oregon has been running HUNH for forever. They have yet to win a NC with it. This the first time since 2006 an SEC has not played for NC. Please go away with this "SEC weakness" crap. The players seemed to have kept up just fine the last 8 years. Also, last year it was a pro-style offense ACC team that beat a HUNH SEC team in the NC game. This year, the team that bumped the SEC out of contention was a spread team but could hardly be considered HUNH. I still wish the SEC could've gotten someone else other than Mizzou.

I like the way Saban slowed Gus down this year. Almost every time Gus wanted to go fast after a 1st down, it was read option that almost always a give to Payne. It seemed like we always had at least 1 LB or S in the backfield making the stop for a loss or at least disrupting the play. Of course Auburn eventually found traction by abusing Bama's short CBs by throwing 50 yard jump balls.
