It's not like we get the talent Bama, UF, LSU, AU, and UGA gets, but to be consistently one of the top teams in the east year after year is pretty impressive.

Heisman, Natty, multiple SEC, multiple SECe, #1 All-time win total at 2 SEC schools, not to mention #2 all-time win total in SEC history.
This shouldn't even be a thread.

Go look at USCe's overall winning pct pre-Spurrier & Post Spurrier.
Isn't he underachieving a bit staying at a school like USCe? Hasn't he maxed out its potential?
No offense to USCe w/ Suprrior, but USCe isn't exactly the perfect place to build an empire.

I would agree with that. But he likes building programs out of not much. See Duke, UF, now SC.
Plus he's on record like 1000 times saying he just loves SC as a place, Cola especially. He likes where he is.

Yes, clearly I am the one who doesn't understand what underachieve means.

Hey guys, I was looking at Jack Nicholson's Oscar record and even though he's won 3 and was nominated 12 times, I mean, how come he didn't win one for every film? Isn't that a little suspect? Can't say I'd hire a lazy bum like that for one of my films.

What does that have to do with football?

Nice thread I see what you did here but I'll bite.
Bottom line is this. Spurriers already forgotten more about coaching than Saban will ever know. Spurrier builds programs Saban is more like a really good Gm. He's not a better coach than spurrier is.
Spurrier won at Duke, UF, and Scar and all those places we're mediocre football programs at best before spurrier arrived though you could argue UF wasn't as bad historically as the other two.
I guess what I'm saying is when your coaching at schools like LSU, Bama and Mich St where you have limitless recruiting resources and a much larger talent base of players to choose from of course it's only natural that you would have a better chance of turning out winning teams and looking better than coach x.

True, but UF is his alma mater, and in a huge state with a ton of talent.

I think this is very true. But the question is, could he achieve more if he was willing to go to someplace he didn't like, but had a stronger foundation.

Is this thread serious? How many coaches do you believe could do what he's done at USC? I (might) be able to count them on 1 hand. His tenure at USC is the most impressive part of his resume.

Yes, and Jeremy Foley is still AD last I checked.

A few years ago, yes. We didn't have much and what we've got now is owed mostly to him. But now that he's got that here, why would he leave? The roster has his hand-picked talent, he has unquestioned local and institutional support, the facilities are completed or nearing completion... what's a near 70 year old guy want w/ starting from scratch?

I actually had D) as "Golfer" before realizing I was a/b to pitch a meatball right down the middle to all our fans here so I had to edit.

You slipped up right here, Spurrier does what the frick he wants. I don't think he'd go somewhere he didn't like or feel comfortable in just to try for a natty.
I realize that's what coaching is to a lot of people but Spurrier is kind of different I think in that regard. He has a philosophy of "I'll do what I want, at a school where I feel good doing it."

Exactly, we've had legends that have won elsewhere and then fell on their face here. And Spurrier didn't even have much success here his first 4-5 years. It took a while. For the guy who said we have all this money and the facilities, that is all brand spanking new. Spurrier admitted he didn't realize how far behind we were in those departments when he first arrived here.
Its all new and there has been a lot of success to show for it.
Yeah we don't have much hardware but we have our first ever top 10 and top finishes, our 1st 3 11-win seasons, longest win streak currently in the nation and an ongoing school best, a few all-americans, 1st ever 5-game win streak vs Clemson (1st 3 game and 4 game win streak vs them since the '60s) etc. etc. etc.
