Another thing is that there's a difference between the consistency of "being loud" and a sharp peak after a pick 6. Everyone would yell for that pick 6, even Hellen Keller would manage some grunts...
But I think that's what makes stadiums like LSU so intimidating, not that they can be EXTREMELY loud after a touchdown. But between 1st-3rd down when our defense on the field, it's still deafening. Just like that SCAR reciever said that he couldn't see the play call signs because his eyes were vibrating from all the noise. THAT is loud.

Have you ever been to a big night game at LSU?

Don't get too caught up with evaluating teams, fans, etc. Arrowhead is crazy loud not because of the fans but because of the design. Despite being open, they accidentally hit on the almost perfect design to target all sound directly to field level. The same crowd that registered 142 in KC last year was no better than the loudest crowds anywhere else.
Last I checked, no one was really sure what it was about Arrowhead's design that essentially makes crowd noise a resonant frequency such that it multiplies itself as the noise travels around the stadium down to the field.

I pretty much assume that Bryant Denny traps no noise at all

Theres no way adding 8k seats to LSUs stadium added 12db at that level of sound.

NFL games are so trashy. Bunch of 50 year old men in jerseys grilling hot dogs in a giant parking lot.

I mean that could make a difference im not sure and theres not really an exact science to trapping noise, or Domes would be the loudest. I would agree Death valley is first or second loudest in CFB along with Autzen in Oregon, but theres a noticeable difference going to arrowhead during a big game vs the games I have been to at both LSU and OR.

I have been to Arrowhead and it is very loud, but Death Valley and The Swamp-when Florida is good- can compete with Arrowhead. I know a few years ago when Kansas City was playing Oakland with Pryor and they had the decibel meter going because there was an ongoing debate on whether Arrowhead or Centurylink was louder. Arrowhead supposedly got up to 137 dBs, which I think 130 dBs is a jet engine if I'm not mistaken.
Make no mistake though, Death Valley is loud as hell. When they played Florida back in 2009, it reached 130 dBs. I've been there multiple times to see 'Bama play in '06, '08, '10, and '12 because I have family in Opelousas and you leave the stadium with your ears ringing. I'd like to go next year with the stadium expanded and all now.

how does arrowhead compare to domed stadiums? I get that it is easier for domed stadiums to get loud, but why aren't they mentioned with arrowhead, Seattle, etc...? if you're talking about places that blow you away with noise intensity, wouldnt you have to include domed stadiums? Why is the noise at arrowhead always qualified with "loudest outdoor", and not just "loudest"?
I'm no scientist, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I believe that the issue in domed stadiums is that the dome traps soundwaves, and that those soundwaves cancel each other out. I've been to some games in domes where, when the action gets really intense, the sound feels weird, sort of muffled, and I think it is a result of that phenomenon. As someone else mentioned, Seattle shaped their roofs like parabolas to focus the sound on the field, but the lack of a dome allows those soundwaves an outlet so they don't just cancel out.
Since Arrowhead doesn't have a roof and still beats Seattle, I have to tip my cap to the Chiefs fans for really being the ones to bring it.

During a timeout at Arrowhead, the crowd’s roar reached 142.2 decibels, smashing the mark of 137.6 registered last year at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. The Chiefs trumpeted the accomplishment on the stadium’s video board, which was shown on national TV: “Arrowhead is now the loudest stadium in the world again.”

why were they yelling during a timeout?

why are the noise meters positioned in the endzone where a small group of drunk assholes can yell right into them at 1:00 into this video? i agree, that would be beyond the pain threshold. i'm not saying it isn't loud, but it isn't like the players (why we get loud) are experiencing this noise intensity.

Yes. I've been to tons of games at Arrowhead and it's every bit as loud as they say.

Seattle is loud. It's a soccer-like atmosphere. Reminded me a lot of Penn State

because measuring the sound at the point on the field that it actually matters is very damaging to the claim...

Not anymore they have security patrolling the upper decks and even giving out tickets for smoking on the exit ramps. No harassment. They're becoming more lovable
losers as the L's pile up. We were invited by Raider fans to their tailgate after the Saints put the hurt on them.

The coolest thing about Arrowhead, is that it has this engraved in the concrete outside the main gate/offices...

I've been to Seattle and it's definitely loud. I'd put it up there with a good SEC game.
College and NFL are just different experiences though. I've been to college games where the noise never stops. That's the difference between NFL and college.

As far as college games, I was at Arrowhead for the ku-Mizzou "Armageddon" game for the #1 ranking in 2007. ku was ranked #2 and Mizzou ranked #4, and it was known that the winner would take over the #1 national ranking because LSU had just lost.
The loudest SEC stadium I've been to personally has been Kyle Field at A&M. I would say the noise level in KC for that ku-Mizzou game in KC was neck and neck with the loudest I've ever heard Kyle. (Granted, A&M usually has flubbed against Mizzou in the games I've been there, but the one game I saw A&M win it got deafening toward the end). KC was neck and neck and that was with a split crowd of half Mizzou and half ku fans, if it had been a singular crowd of just one faction cheering in unison on certain plays I can't even imagine.
I'm going to the BYU-Mizzou game in Arrowhead this year and can't wait. Bring it, Mormons.
