You're right. Let's just send the baseball players to Rhoads stadium and use the new Joe as a great tailgating area.

Hell, maybe we'll get to go in and watch Alabama on the jumbotron during the national championship next year.

Gotcha... I thought I heard the broadcasters that the current assistant was HCIW during one of the regional games last week. I must be thinking of a different team or something.

Seriously? I mean, I'm the biggest Bama fan around but that would be stupid move. Tulane is better baseball job. Bama has no chance to compete. He's built a nice little program there and has a great advantage with the lotto schollies. Coming to Bama would be a career killer. Just telling it like it is. I don't figure Bama can do much better than an asst coach already in Alabama working with schollie reductions

If you actually were a Bama fan, you'd know pretty much not one single thing you just wrote is true.

You have to look no further than Mississippi to see that the lack of a lottery scholarship system does not mean baseball failure.

Tulane beat writer not hearing this. Could very well be true but I'm curious why there's not more sources reporting this.

It would be nice to have a coach that can beat Ole Miss.

Any SEC job is better than Tulane's. Tulane is one bad hurricane away from shutting down all its sports programs & it came real close only a few yrs ago. The Tulane faculty hates sports there. Tulane is limited athletically when it comes to money as well. Pierce will be leaving Tulane at some point in time, either way, be it to Bama, Rice or Texas.

I was very sad after what that big bitch Katrina did after it came through and flooded the Tulane campus.

Just built a $42 million stadium. That's not showing interest and commitment into the program?

You only built it because Saban said he needed it to help recruiting.

Saban gets what Saban wants ~ Alabama got a brand new baseball stadium the same year football brought home another NC trophy. Works for me.

We know.

Perhaps we should spell it out for you. It is 10% off with that $5,100 TOPS award. Massive advantage for Tulane. Their Louisiana baseball players only have to pay $45,000 a year to play there without other financial aid. Must be why slightly over 20% of their roster is from Louisiana.

The maximum TOPS award at Tulane is the average Louisiana public college tuition.

This doesn't come anywhere close to covering Tulane's tuition of about $43,000.

Yeah I really just don't see him going to Bama unless they throw a good amount of money at him, which I don't think Bama is that committed to baseball.

Except for the whole $40 million just spent on facility upgrades.

I'll be honest, I had forgotten y'all built that stadium. I still think it's going to take a decent amount of money to pull him from Tulane right now and if Texas offers him you can forget about it.

Don't you think Texas would go after a much bigger name coach than Tulane's?

Possibly. I don't think it's a for sure thing that they offer him. Pierce does have a very strong track record of coaching success as an assistant and head coach now and deep roots in Texas recruiting, so if they do offer him it would make sense from that standpoint and would be a smart move on their part IMO.

However, it is Texas and a lot of times their arrogance keeps them from doing the smart thing and they always want the "big" name.

If Bama does manage to nab him, it would be an excellent hire. I think very highly of Pierce, I know some people that played under him at Rice and Sam Houston.

ETA: Looks like the Longhorn bloggers are campaigning for Pierce now that they've been turned down by McDonnell, O'Sullivan, and Schlossnagle.

quote:

With strong ties to the state of Texas, Pierce emerged as a dark-horse candidate -- and now, the favorite candidate-- for the Texas job. He has only been at Tulane for two years, so it would be an early departure, but Pierce only stayed at his first job at Sam Houston State for three seasons. A former Rice assistant, Pierce had once been pegged as 80-year-old Rice head coach Wayne Graham's eventual replacement, but it would be hard for Pierce to say no to Texas.
