David Pierce we hear is close to inking a deal at Alabama. If Texas wants him they'll have to move fast.

that comes from an organization that keeps up with baseball coaching changes

Pierce is considered a very good coach. It also has a chance to hurt LSU.

Seriously? I mean, I'm the biggest Bama fan around but that would be stupid move. Tulane is better baseball job. Bama has no chance to compete. He's built a nice little program there and has a great advantage with the lotto schollies. Coming to Bama would be a career killer. Just telling it like it is. I don't figure Bama can do much better than an asst coach already in Alabama working with schollie reductions.
I think he'll re-think this one. We end up with somebody from Jax State or an asst at South Alabama or something.

I'm told Alabama has serious interest in Pierce, but zero chance he moves without direction on Texas.

You dumb gumps really over exaggerate the TOPS program in Louisiana. Do you even understand how it works?

no such thing as "lotto scholies"

we have TOPS - but budget is reducing them & does not really effect tulane
what they do have is legislative scholies, used 3 or 4, couple years back - full ride for local kids. they have to be awarded by elective official for his area

Yeah I really just don't see him going to Bama unless they throw a good amount of money at him, which I don't think Bama is that committed to baseball. If he doesn't get the Texas job I could really see him staying put to wait for the Rice job to open up when Graham finally hangs it up.

Oh? LINK

quote:

Since its inception, the Taylor Opportunity Program for Students — otherwise known as TOPS — gave Louisiana’s state schools some cost-effective flexibility on the college baseball diamond.

Per NCAA rules, Division I baseball programs are given 11.7 scholarships to distribute among a total of 27 student-athletes at what percentage the head coach sees fit. Typically the scholarships are divvied up by portions and divided among team members.

"The TOPS program, to me, felt like it gave you three or four more scholarships to work with," Louisiana Tech baseball coach Greg Goff said. "It's a tremendous, tremendous advantage for the state of Louisiana baseball teams."

The TOPS program allowed Louisiana coaches to save scholarship money by filling out their rosters with in-state players who met the requirements of a 20 on the ACT and 2.8 GPA for a tuition waiver.

Just built a $42 million stadium. That's not showing interest and commitment into the program?

You only built it because Saban said he needed it to help recruiting.

Patrick Hallmark and David Pierce are the two who most Rice people want when Graham finally retires.

Pierce was an assistant on their national championship team and then has moved on to be a very successful head coach at Sam Houston and now Tulane. Also has very deep Houston connections being from there, played at UH, and even coached high School baseball in Houston.

Hallmark played at Rice and has been assistant there for over 10 years now.

It's really a toss up on who they would prefer, but with Pierce's experience as a head coach, he is who I would prefer if I was Rice.

Even your baseball "commitment" was just yet another commitment to football.
