Georgia faces a big risk by firing Mark Richt

We all know that he's a habitual underachiever, and there's absolutely no doubt Georgia COULD do better if they hired a different coach. Here's the problem, he has consistently won them 9/10 games a year, and he's brought about a positive image surrounding UGA that many Dawg fans don't want to lose.

As the old saying goes: If you fire a coach, you COULD do better, but it's also possible that things COULD get much worse. What happens if the next guy either doesn't win as much consistently, or wins an equal amount/more, but also allows the inmates to run the asylum and the reputation is destroyed. Jimbo Fisher is a prime example. A NC winning coach that most top schools probably wouldn't touch because of the negative perceptions, and FSU certainly hasn't benefited from a PR standpoint from him.

If Georgia fires Richt, they better be damn sure to hit a Homerun with the next hire. You're about to double down with 14 already on the table.

that's an excuse imo. you have to figure it out. Michigan now got harbaugh, auburn got a natty, really the only teams that haven't worked out in some way or another is Texas and Tennessee

It's a gamble for sure. You could hire the next Urban Meyer, you could hire the next Derek Dooley.

At this point it's a gamble most Dawg fans are willing to take.

At some point though, it will be an easy decision. You are right...9-10 win seasons isn't going to cause UGA to ditch Richt.

But whats going on at UGA right now is different, at least to me. There is a total and utter lack of leadership on the team and supposed fighting and unrest within the coaching staff.

Richt looks more defeated this year then ever before. Keep a close eye on UGA for the next few weeks. IF the team rights the ship and we go 4/4 then I'd say Richt will be back in Athens next year, but if we drop 2-3 of these next 4, we may not have to make that hard of a decision.

I agree with this. Take out UT as they are a perpetual dumpster fire, and the hit rate on coaching change seems well above 50%. It's a risk we simply have to take. I mean hayull, chizik was the worst SEC hire of the last 20 yrs and that clown has a ring.

What an idiot.

That 'dumpster fire' beats you more than they lose to you.

There is always going to be that risk, but there is still an upward bias towards being a good team due to UGA being UGA. Michigan, OSU, and Bama hit the jackpot recently, but they could all just as easily have been in complete disarray the past few years (Michigan was of course). UF may be a good example. UGA may have to endure a few years of a Muschamp type situation in the interim, but chances are you going to make it work with a guy like McElwain eventually. As a pretty neutral observer, I would probably want to shake things up at this point if I were a UGA fan.

You must be counting those moral victories in 13-14. I was only counting your actual win this year. One so impressive it will probably get our coach fired.

Now look at the past decade of UT's coaching situation in major sports, then ask yourself "who is the idiot?" Good luck

If Richt beats Auburn, he will keep his job. Lose and he's gone.

It is always a gamble when you change head coaches. Richt has had 15 years to try his thing at UGA. Eventually there comes a time when both parties need to move on if they feel this isn't going to work out.

Sometimes schools try the old "gotta have a proven head coach" and the hire failes. Sometimes a school hires a Stoops like Oklahoma did that was a coordinator and wins natty titles. And sometimes a school hires a coordinator and loses.

Sometimes a school has a brain dead AD that hires a loser coach. Sometimes a coach just isn't the right fit.

Currently, 5-3 with 4 winnable games left on the schedule (Kentucky, Auburn, Ga. Southern and Ga Tech). Crazy to think that as bad as this team has been offensively they could reach 10 wins with a bowl victory. Not saying they will.....

This one is a wait and see. I think 1 more loss in the next 4 may get the natives to take some action. The Georgia administration and fans need to decide why they play football and ultimately do they want to play for national championships. If so, the decision should be rather easy given Richt's 15 year track record in Athens without a championship. I like Richt and think him to be a good guy, but not sure he will ever get it done.

You know we haven't scored a TD in nearly 2 and a half games, right?

Wat?

Winning your first Natty in 50 something years is doing much worse?

All they really need is a recruiter in that state. If they kept more of those athletes at home, they would be a force. That's why most people hope they continue to keep him. Georgia is probably the third best recruiting ground in the country. It's definitely up there.

I agree with the OP. I posted this about it in the other Richt topic on the Score Board before it got locked. Not saying there won't come a time when Richt clearly needs to move on (maybe even this season), but Georgia should tread with caution.

Richt could lose his job on Saturday by losing to Kentucky.

I don't think losing to Auburn would necessarily cost him his job, but it's possible.
