Yeah. I don't think they can make it without one, and I don't think they have enough backing to build one without using a lot of funds from the university because they don't have the backing from boosters. That's why I wouldn't bring them back before the city agreed to build a new stadium.
Can't imagine the City of B'ham building it, going to have to be the University imho. We shall see.

One of the B'ham people will have to answer that, no clue. But it would be a hard sell to get the city to build a smallish stadium, 30-40k seating, that could not be used for anything else really. Maybe get the AHSAA finals back to B'Ham, but can't imagine what else it could be used for.. Best hope is that all of the supporters of Blazer football that have been so vocal will pony up the cash, or a good chunk of it.

Hopefully the NCAA doesn't frick the players who transferred if they want to come back.

it wasn't the city,it was Jefferson County. Yes,they interact but Birmingham is not a metropolitan govt like Nashville,Indianapolis,Miami, etc. With that said, the city of isn't swimming in money. One sticking point on the 'dome' is the Magic City Classic. They do get 60-65k for that one, and dome drawings are only for 35-40,k.

I know the announcement isn't official yet, but I wonder if they will play this season or will they wait a year?

Would the voters in B'ham have to approve of the Dome? I seem to remember it getting voted down several years ago.

Fair point

"MAPS" was shot down in 1998 by the voters. I voted for it. It was not a well done marketing program by the supporters.
The only way UAB can be vibrant in football for years to come would be a 35-40,000 seat on-campus stadium. A Dome would be great as the SEC basketball tournament would get back in the mix as well as NCAA tourney games, but a 75,000 one isn't practical. But then if the 40-45k dome is built and Legion Field is leveled, the Magic City Classic folks leave and that is a tremendous amount of $$.

Brilliant move by the BOT. Get rid of all of the crappy players, now start over with great talent that will want to come to UAB since all of this support has been shown.

There were a few locals and a UAB fan or two that participated in reasonable discussion here, but 99% of the posts on this topic have been straight up mud-slinging at UA from rival fans that couldn't give a shite about UAB.
Because 99% of the UA fans knee-jerkingly supported the decision and wanted to make it a discussion about UA.

Agreed. I don't see any need for the city to build a 40K seat football stadium. UAB needs to do this on their own so they shed the perception (that is based on some realities) that they are dependent on others. If they want to carve out a niche and really build their support, they need a small stadium for themselves.
The next step for the city of Birmingham should be a basketball arena similar to Bridgestone in Nashville. A city leader told me that was the next goal. If that gets put on hold in order to give UAB a stadium, I'll be pissed.

quote:No coaches, no players, no 2015 recruiting class, no spring practice session.......I don't see them being able to field a team for another 2 yrs. Who's gonna coach, and once you've lost an entire recruiting class you're behind the eight ball in roster number which could take years to build back up.

It'll definitely take a couple of years due to the loss of players, but if Bill Clark comes back as coach (I believe he was planning to sit out this season), that goes a long way towards getting things back going relatively quickly.

quote:Quickly? How many players transferred? A dozen, 2 dozen, the whole team? Seriously, Clark will need warm bodies on that roster and losing an entire '15 class will be tough to overcome.

The key word in there is "relatively". Like I said, it will be tough for a couple/three years regardless. But Clark would/will? be in a better position to get them somewhere in three or four years than just about anyone else.
