While I agree with you that the USNWR rankings are full of shite, they are better than most IMO and certainly better than the ones that were presented in this thread.

ETA: I wish Gourman Report still ranked by undergraduate programs which is much more useful. IMO, the best way to rank something is ROI and starting salaries based on college major, so we are comparing apples to apples

I suppose it is all relative, but garbage is garbage however it is packaged. Not much point in defending one pile of garbage as not quite as awful as another.

Pretty much every college ranking is subjective and full of shite. The only way to accurately rank anything is by program.

This one is definitely not an excuse. By MS law, it would be racist for MSU or OM to have higher admissions standards than the HBUs.

Maybe the state of Mississippi should educate your black or minority population more. I notice a lot of people in Mississippi blame black students for their low rankings. I compared Mizzou to KU, Mizzou have higher percentage of blacks than KU....MU is ranked higher. Bama and LSU have similar black populations and Bama is usually ranked higher. UGA, Auburn, Bama are usually ranked higher than Mizzou, guess what those schools have more African Americans compared to Mizzou, you'd think Mizzou would be ranked higher...LSU have more african americans than Mizzou and usually ranked lower. Race isn't that much of a factor.

Search schools demographics....2008

Here's the population of african americans at some SEC and other schools....
black/total students/undergrads
LSU. 2063/28810/23396
Miss State 2754/17824/13991
Ole Miss 1694/15220/12661
Mizzou 1322/28447/21654
Bama 2476/27014/22341
Auburn 1641/24530/20037
UGA 1689/34180/25467
South Carolina 2243/27488/19765
Florida 3485/51474/34654

other schools

University of Kansas 787/29365/21332
University of Oklahoma 1074/26185/19592
Southern California 852/33747/16608

Ole Miss and State are probably better than Baylor. Obviously they have a med school that neither of y'all could hold a candle to, but they are still lowly ranked by Lone Star standards. No real bearing on the Mississippi schools t

I disagree. Baylor has made major strides over the past decade. Fifteen years ago I would have agreed with you. That was before the Baylor adopted and implemented a strategic plan to improve its academics.

Lone Star standards notwithstanding, Baylor is a solid school academically, although admittedly not on par with Rice, UT,or TAMU.

OK, I am done. I can't believe I am defending Baylor. I don't like their school colors. Don't like the politics of Baylor's president. Have never gone their as a student or faculty member. What am I thinking. Guess I am just in a cranky mood.

Student Satisfaction (25%)
- Student Evaluations from Ratemyprofessor.com (15%)
- Freshman & Sophomore Retention Rates (5%)
- Predicted Freshman & Sophomore Retention Rates (5%)

Post Graduate Success (35%)
- Salary for alumni from payscale.com (15%)
- American Leaders List (20%)

Student Debt (17.5%)
- Average Student Loan Debt Load (10%)
- Student Loan Default Rates (5%)
- Predicted vs Actual Percent of Students Taking Federal Loans (2.5%)

Four Year Graduation Rate (11.25%)
- Actual Four Year Gratuation Rate (8.75%)
- Predicted vs Actual Four Year Graduation Rate (2.5%)

Academic Success (11.25%)
- Student Nationally Competitive Awards (7.5%)
- Alumni Receiving PhDs (3.75%)

Ratemyprofessor.com counts for 15% of the score...but it is not a reliable rating tool. They do not use a formula to rank schools. Many times, it is just lazy students criticizing the professors who ask them to learn and praising the professors who never show up to class. Here is a gem featured on the website written about a professor: “Try to get her for the 8AM, she’s 15mins late every class due to her train”.

1. Baylor University does not have a med school -- Baylor College of Medicine is 100% unaffiliated. They actually license the name Baylor from BU -- as does Baylor Health System up in DFW..

2. Don't give them too much credit. They're building lots of stuff on campus, but the academic standards there still lag behind many of the public universities in Texas, and similar-sized private universities nationwide.

While USNWR rankings are certainly not without limitations, it is interesting to note the meteoric rise in Baylor's standing over the past few years. They are currently at 77, not that far behind TAMU (65), and well ahead of most Texas universities not named Rice, UT, SMU or ATM. IMO they are correctly placed behind these schools but well ahead of Houston, Texas Tech or TCU.

Their rise is based on more than buildings alone. Look at the relative standing in various disciplines, and changes over the past 10 or so years.

Baylor is a good example of a school that made strategic decisions to improve through improved scholarship and teaching in addition to the addition of new buildings.

.

List of things they didn't take into account:

Average standardized test scores of entering Freshmen;
Average GPA of entering Freshmen;
% of applicants accepted;
job placement - % employment of graduates within 1 year;
% of graduates pursuing graduate degrees;
ratio of graduate salaries to tuition cost;
