This map is really more indicative than anything. Missouri is mostly a Midwestern state... except for St. Louis. Good luck convincing us we're not on the east coast.

Never understood how people don't realize that there's a difference between the 2 and 3 syllable variety.
Car-a-mel is the ingredient which goes into candies and such.
Cara-mel is the sole entity of the substance, such as a caramel cube.

I've always associated both "Crawdads" and "Mudbugs" as nicknames for Crawfish rather than actual names. Can't imagine someone saying "my buddy is boiling some Crawdads tonight."
Exactly, they're nicknames. If you're going to eat them, they're crawfish. In Missouri, they're usually too small to eat, except in river bottom areas..

Good stuff, thanks for the link.
I grew up in a borderline crawdad area of Texas, but like the Mizzou guys they were never big enough to eat, so it wasn't often a topic of discussion. They were just fun for 10-yr olds to dig up.
They left one out, but I'm not sure if this is a regional thing or if my wife is just flat wrong: Praline. I say PRAY-leen, and it drives my Mississippi wife nuts. For her it is PRAH-leen. What sayeth the Rant?

Praw-leen
Pray-leen is almost as bad as pee-can.

Exactly. pa-kahn...kahn like in star trek.
Grew up in SW LA 6 miles from the TX line and have always said coke for random soft drinks, kool-aid regardless if it was hawaian punch or something else, devil is beating his wife is all I've ever heard rain called when the sun is out, caramel has 3 syllables, Mayo is pronounced me-naise (e has the same sound as the e in egg) if something was crooked it was ally-gogglin and if someone had just pulled a fast one he was said to be smiling like a shite eating possum, and an icy road was slicker than owl shite.

It is most assuredly PRAH-leen.
The Crawdad/Crayfish label is a sure-fire sign of, if not extreme yankeedom, geographic displacement from the Deep South for an extended period of time.

Meh, I prefer to look at the South from a religion standpoint...religion is much more indicative of "culture" than anything

You'd think with all the Mexicans and Cubans, Texas and Florida would be much less Protestant influenced.

Indeed, you can see their influence in the southern regions of FLA and TX

The one thing I learned is that I need to learn and use the phrase
That is awesome in a billion kind of ways. I've never heard that.

This is actually very interesting and kinda funny. I call tennis shoes Kicks, and I say craw- fish and I call a traffic circle just a circle.
