So let me get this right. All the opposing fans laughed at Eli and called him slow and called him the "next Verne," but now they're championing him as the greatest of all time and Bama is evil and bad because they cut him loose? Some of y'all need to get your story straight. You look silly.

Let’s not act like you guys don’t do this often.

Red Barber kept an egg timer in the booth to remind him to give score and situation updates over the air every three minutes. Eli needed an egg timer.

I'm genuinely confused as to why you're struggling with this concept.
Oh I get it, your work for the government, now this makes sense. Ok, cigarette break is over, that mail isn't going to sort itself.

Radio must be alive and well these days. Frankly, since wifi, I have lost contact.
I use Wifi to listen to radio.

What are you blathering about, corndog? YOUR fans start stupid threads like this one and don't expect the truth to be shot back at you?

Discard and throw away when you least expect it. It’s the Bama way.

Ha. Way past due for anybody that has to occasionally listen on radio

Bama needs an announcer that will be a little more Bama based. I'm tired of these people trying to sound unbiased. I liked Eli but Chris Stewart will be an upgrade.

Have anyone here listened to Eli call a game? Terrible. When plays would start you would not know what is going on until it was over. A radio play by play guy has to call the game knowing the listener can’t see. Guys back in the 60’s and 70’s before all tv were good. Like John Furgason, Mississippi State guy Kristol, the Ole Miss, Tennessee and Georgia guys were good. Sorry can’t remember their names but head over heels better than Eli Gold.

I'm not surprised that Eli couldn't take the hint and bow out gracefully. Icon though he is, he has always been a touch pompous, and sounded very much like a guy who's been told every day for 35 years that he's an absolute legend. I'm glad for the memories, but he really had gotten bad at his job and I have little tolerance for egos so big they take a crap on those who dare suggest they have passed their prime.

The people who don’t listen to games on the radio will make a big deal about this. I almost strictly listen to games and it was time for him to go

It doesn’t take much research to find out why Eli was fired from NASCAR in 2016. Surprised Bama didn’t fire him then.

I'll dredge this up for one last comment.
When watching SEC games, I stream the radio broadcast as I watch on TV. The difference in the quality of the play-by-play is evident. Radio assumes you can't see what's happening and, thus, tries to "paint a picture" of what's going on
That being said, I always enjoyed the play-by-play of Eli Gold on the Bama broadcasts. Unfortunately, I didn't listen often enough to notice any change in the quality as the years have passed.
Initially, I was more than a little miffed at some of the comments from Bama fans not supporting Gold. As I read more, it was evident that Gold's abilities were in decline and that, yes, maybe it was time to move on.
I was reminded of the later years of Larry Munson at Georgia. I'm no UGA fan, but listened to him because of his unique style. He was doing Bulldog and Falcons play by play later in his career. And towards the end, the decline was very noticeable to the point of being a distraction. I listen to Todd Ellis and Tommy Suggs call my Gamecocks' games. Todd Ellis is great but it's obvious that time is taking its toll on Tommy. He's more of a grandfatherly side kick than a color analyst.
Bottom line is that age catches up with us all. Was it time for Eli Gold to be replaced? I don't know. But, I'd hate to see him hang around and become a caricature of his former self like Lee Corso has on College GameDay.

ehh sorry, I get people like some old voices, but the dude is 70..its time to move on my man. Make room for the next up and comer to call games. Thinking youre going to call games until youre 80 is nuts

Listen to a recent Eli Gold called game and see if you can tell what's actually happening on the field as far as down and distance. He got too old, the younger guy did a better job, end of story. They tried to keep him involved at a lesser level and he didn't like that, guess he thought it was his right to be the play by play guy for life even if he can't do the job properly anymore.
