The Birmingham Stallions, probably.

Lol. None of this is true.

Eta: Well the part about being an icon is probably true after doing PBP for decades for probably the best college football program of all time. But even icons eventually can’t do it anymore. But plenty of people have been saying it was time for a few years now.

Fanbase was split 50/50 at best, with most of the support being “he’s lost his edge and sucks at his job now, but deserves to go out on his own terms.”

Apparently his terms were another decade which just wasn’t an option.

Eli can act however he wants about this, but if he keeps deciding to throw a hissy fit then his reputation with the fanbase is going to take a serious nosedive.

This already happened for me. I posted in another thread that I’d think a lot more of Eli if he acknowledged that his health and age have cost him a step and ride off into the sunset. He’d be beloved and respected by 30 years of Bama fans. This bitter old man holding on til the end act is going to cost him his reputation in a lot of eyes, including mine. Chris Stewart is inarguably better at the job at this point.

Alabama has another play by play guy that is objectively better by a pretty wide margin. The better performer is getting the job at this point. Will happen to all of us at some point. Age is a bitch.

Not to mention how horrible a spot he's putting Chris Stewart in - a guy who has waited his turn (and dealt with tons of medical hardships himself) with grace and humility for years.

Agree 100%. I love Eli and appreciate his 35 years but to say he was slippimg is an understatement. Not providing the distance (e.g. "a short gain, leaving 3rd and long for Bama") repeatedly used to drive me bananas. And as mentioned, his 4th & 31 call was just sad. It was just time to move on. I am awfully glad he beat cancer and hope he remains cancer free & wish him the best of luck with his new job.

They can't process players or coaches anymore, so they are processing announcers.

The problem with Boomers is their need to hold the post until they die... They'd rather go out looking senile than gracefully pass the torch to someone they groomed because most aren't even grooming the next generation. He has his time.. but it's not HIS job.. he didn't create it.

I've enjoyed listening to Eli like the next fan.. we were actually pretty cool when I worked in media.. Chris is a great basketball guy and will evolve into a great football guy.. I know Chris he used to be a guest on my podcast years ago. It's his time to shine and thankfully the business people at BAMA know this... I wish our 2 leading presidential candidates would take a long walk because it's time for the old guard everywhere to step aside and stf down somewhere.

You can tell who has listened to Eli recently and who hasn’t.

IF Auburn announced today that Andy Burcham's contract with AU would not be renewed, would you upset?

Be honest, are you pleased with Andy's job performance and delivery relative to his play-by-play in football?

That’s where you are really wrong. I’ve criticized Eli for decades. He was never a great football broadcaster. If you’ve ever listened to one, you can tell the difference between great, good, and average. I’d put Eli as between good and average at best. The only reason that he is “beloved” is because he is the only voice most younger fans have ever known. They watched the games on TV while playing the radio, so they always could see the accurate down and distance, time remaining, and formation set up. It you had to only hear and not see the game, Eli was never very good at any of those things. He also talked way too much and his color analyst, other than Stabler, got cut off quite often because the next play would start and Eli would take over.

Eli was never a “homer” and his broadcasts reflected it. I would have loved to have had a Jim Fyffe, Larry Munson, or John Forney for Nick Saban’s tenure. Eli was too “matter of fact” for college football. I never considered him a fan of Alabama or college football.

Why do some of you care so much about Alabama’s radio play by play team?

Eli Gold has been pretty bad for years. His contract wasn’t renewed. It’s time for Chris Stewart to take over. End of discussion.

I guess he should have murdered or purposefully tried to injure someone.

That is quite the imagination because I remember he got a reputation for being homer while the snake was realist and they had a good thing going during the sucky years for bama.

I mean yeah Eli is beloved he has called like 10 sec titles for Bama. He represents an end of the era so maybe it is fitting just to call it quits when Saban call it quits to achieve new wine in new wineskin, but Bama firing the guy is savage af in a pearl clutching way for the average joes that think they are too important to get cast away.

And for whoever asked whether I would be happy if we fired Burcham:

Not only that I would him help pack offices and ship him out to work the baseball games. He does not have a radio voice. I felt Eli did. I would gladly replace Eli for Burcham based on merits. Eli may not be as good of a guy is Burcham but Burcham just leaves too much to be desired. He literally relaced the legend in Rod Bramblett and Auburn fans have gone from the Penthouse to the outhouse.

Radio must be alive and well these days. Frankly, since wifi, I have lost contact.

I haven’t listened to the broadcasts with any routine since college. And Eli was objectively below average then. He’s absolutely an icon considering how long he’s done it. But fans have been clamoring for Chris Stewart for a long time. He’s considerably much better at the job.

Oh no! How will we know what the opposing team's uniforms look like?
