Mulkey Man, excellent melt on the hoops thread last night!

LOL, I triggered a massive Gump melt. Had the Gumps coming out the woodwork by calling out the latest Bama cheap shot.

That is quite the imagination because I remember he got a reputation for being homer while the snake was realist and they had a good thing going during the sucky years for bama.
quote:
The only reason that he is “beloved” is because he is the only voice most younger fans have ever known. They watched the games on TV while playing the radio, so they always could see the accurate down and distance, time remaining, and formation set up.

I mean yeah Eli is beloved he has called like 10 sec titles for Bama. He represents an end of the era so maybe it is fitting just to call it quits when Saban call it quits to achieve new wine in new wineskin, but Bama firing the guy is savage af in a pearl clutching way for the average joes that think they are too important to get cast away.

And for whoever asked whether I would be happy if we fired Burcham:

Not only that I would him help pack offices and ship him out to work the baseball games. He does not have a radio voice. I felt Eli did. I would gladly replace Eli for Burcham based on merits. Eli may not be as good of a guy as Burcham, but Burcham just leaves too much to be desired. He literally relaced the legend in Rod Bramblett and Auburn fans have gone from the Penthouse to the outhouse since then.

Bramblett replaced the legend. Fyffe was the ultimate college football broadcaster behind Larry Munson. I wish Alabama would have had a Jim Fyffe for the last 20 years. It would have been amazing.

3 threads on the rant front page about BAMA radio. And people wonder who runs college football.

Has more to do with Learfield than Bama. But it was time.

Eli is slipping bad. Just go listen to his call of 4th and 31 if you need proof. It's time to move on. Chris Stewart is much better at this point in their careers. Better to let Eli go now while he still has his dignity.

They were both awesome. Bramblett can throw in bits of genuine euphoric moments like in the kick six when he let out "Holy Cow!" and those are the moments where Bramblett flexed as an announcer.

Burcham doesnt have any of that. Good guy, bad announcer.

As the fan of a team who let their "iconic" broadcaster continue until he was 80. (And he was a silent generationer and not a Boomer)...

It is kind of painful to listen to the calls and watch the decline. Between butchering names, and mixing metaphors... ("He's got his hands cut out for him", "former Norgman tire"...should be Norman Tiger.) were a couple of my favorites)... to simply not being able to understand what the hell is going on... Lot's of "caught, dropped, caught" in every game...I just quit listening to the radio calls over the TV and just listened to the TV guys.

If Eli Gold is starting to slip, Bama is doing the right thing in not waiting until he is a complete embarrassment. And I say this "with no bones attached".

I like Burcham better than Bramblett.

Look I am a Bama fan and I respect Eli and I understand his iconic status because he’s been the voice of the Saban glory years. But he’s slipped badly and the idea of him being there another decade is just ludicrous. Do we really need an 80-year-old announcer?

It’s obvious he has no intention of going to the house, ever, he’s going to keep doing this for anyone who will give him a microphone until he keels over dead in the middle of calling a play, and I don’t think “tradition” and an “iconic status” is a reason for Alabama to facilitate that.

Yeah but judging by the concern for his welfare from LSU and Auburn fans, You might be in a bidding war for him.

I'm 47 and respect what Eli has done. He's a consummate professional, and has a great radio voice, but I have always hated having to listen to him call a Bama game because you never got a good feel of what was going on, or the flow of a game. It was well past time.

idk man I was just never a fan of Bramblett's commentating. Not trying to speak negatively of someone who passed away tragically or anything, but Fyfe was up there with the GOATs, and Bramblett just didn't do it for me. Which means absolutely nothing considering I am an Alabama fan.

Alabama has another play by play guy that is objectively better by a pretty wide margin. The better performer is getting the job at this point.

Always felt Gold was overrated. His voice is grating.
