It pains me to make this thread but it needs to be said.
Mizzou makes no god damn sense in the SEC (culturally). Easily a good fit for Big 10/12. But Mizzou is MIDWESTERN. At least Texas and Oklahoma have the cowboy shtick going on. Mizzou just makes me think of Blue hair and poop.
Kudos to them for winning the SEC East a few times though

being a land grant school goes a long way. Especially when you suck at everything

Its all about TV. SEC wants St. Louis tv sets tuned in.

SEC already had STL tv market.
State of Missouri doesn’t care about Mizzou sports.
It’s pro sports and what other SEC schools are doing

I've had people from Missouri tell me they were from the south

Despite the cow on the helmet, t.u. is more blue hair and poop than cowboy. Go to Austin and see for yourself.

Two times does not equal 'a few.' You dolt.

Yeah but I want MY tv set tuned into 1000000 BAWS with some DIP in their LIP. Not some CBD SMOKING pansies.

You're right, we don't fit in.
Education is too high, obesity is too low... But we do score high in meth, which helps us adjust better.
As for the cowboy angle, about a third of this state thinks its cowboys.
1/3 cowboys
1/3 rednecks
1/3 normal people

Once a week, like clockwork.

I went up to Columbia for the first time in a long time last week (last went back in the Big XII days) and there are things about it that make you think it's a strange fit. But, I'll say this: while parts of the state of Arkansas are very much Deep South, the area around Fayetteville shares a lot more in common with Columbia than it does with, say, Baton Rouge or Gainesville. OU, Arkansas, and Missouri fit together pretty well, geographically. The place I where I had supper Friday night reminded me in some ways of a sports bar where I ate in Lexington.

What they really are missing is a passionate fan base. If they had that, the geography wouldn't be an issue.

I'm sure this thread will be more enlightening than the thousand identical ones posted here before. But here we go again.
Mizzou doesn't fit naturally anywhere. It's in the middle of the damn country and pulls cultural influences from everywhere. The southeastern part of the state is quite Southern. So I'm guessing that most of the folks who get very riled up when you call Missouri a cultural misfit are from that part of the state. The northern bit of Missouri might as well be Iowa. Kansas City has more in common with Denver than any other city I've visited, but without the pretty scenery. St. Louis feels like a Chicago wannabe with some New Orleans vibes.
You know the conference we fit in best? The Big Eight. But Texas wrecked it with their greed and arrogance, so here we are. Colorado and Nebraska ain't comin' back. Those two schools were our peers and rivals for over 100 years. Once they were gone, it was really just Mizzou, Kansas, and the Oklahoma schools left. That's not much to go on so when the SEC presented an opportunity, of course Mizzou took it. They would've been fools not to take it.
And on the Big Ten front: we'd be as much of a cultural misfit there as we are here. To most of those schools, Mizzou is part of the South. Sure, we have some common bonds with Nebraska and Iowa, but we have more in common with pretty much all SEC schools than we do with the likes of Rutgers, Penn State, or Michigan.

Missouri does have parts of the state that are very southern. Other parts midwestern. They did have a star in the confederate flag, like Kentucky but didn't officially join the Confederacy, like Kentucky. Yet definitely not Yankee. See Josey Wales. They grow cotton in Missouri which is a southern thing. They border Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas.
Again, don't get the Missouri hate. They chose to join us and have southern attributes, so I welcome them.
I find it funny that people have a problem with Missouri in the SEC have no issue with West Virginia in the Big 12 or Louisville in the ACC.

Great post. I'll still give Mizzou shite at every possible chance but this I think is a candid and well-worded analysis of something not many of us here understand. Most of us see Mizzou as no closer than Canada

It makes about as much sense as having Vandy in the SEC. The culture of Mizzou fits the Big 10 much more than the SEC. Vandy fits the Ivy League

Go to tell someone from Cape Girardeau, Sikeston, or Poplar Bluff that they aren't from the South. Those are fightin' words down there.
But yea, if it's someone from say Kansas City claiming they are from the South, give me a break.
