I'll leave it at this- we're talking about a number equated to proven success and legit upside. I think yall paid much more for upside, which is not unheard of, but when you're talking about making someone a top-10 salaried head coach, it doesn't really seem sound.
Seeming sound is relative. It isn't that much money for us, so paying him isn't going to detract from any other expenses. If it did, I could buy the narrative about it not being sound, but as is, I sort of reject that premise.
quote:
But as yall have said, and you are right, is that he's worth what you are willing to pay for him. And you guys paid for him to stay. I get that.
Correct.
quote:
But when you take the context out of it, he's being overpaid based on real proven value. As you said, market value is market value.
Well, you can't take the context out of it. That's the point.
quote:
I'm just saying he's overrated.
And you're entitled to that opinion, but clearly Texas A&M and USC felt differently.
quote:
That is, market value > true value.
Well you don't know his true value. Some might say that the football program brings in so much money for the school, that all coaches are underrated, as their true value is multiple times their "market value".
quote:
But I reserve the right to be proven wrong if he proves himself worth that $5M.
Again, I'm confused what this barrier is that people think he has actually proven, when that value is different for different programs. We could probably afford twice what we are paying him if it really came down it.

You're mistakenly taking amusement for anger.

Nah.
I've been around long enough to recognize the difference.

No. Steinbrenner ruined MLB with money. College football is headed in the same direction.
What in the world are you talking about.

we were told we would be lucky to make a bowl in our first couple seasons,
Sounds like a reasonable excuse to double his salary, because people were saying A&M wouldn't do well their first season. Yep, no championships at all, but dammit, we proved those people wrong! Sounds like low expectations.

Fair point. The fact is that Sumlin has never won a conference championship, and yet we're paying him like a top 5 coach. Why are we doing that? Because he was getting massive offers from other top programs; if we wanted to keep him, we had to pay. He's getting paid like a top 5 coach. Time will tell if he gets results like a top 5 coach. I think he's an incredibly good coach, but the proof is in the pudding. Time will tell.

USC was offering him 6. 0% interest on home loan, and a few other really good perks. Buyout is 5 mil. He can't entertain any more NFL overtures for 3 years.
Didn't even know USC offered the job. Must have missed this story. Was it public or just super secret insider texags info?

It's been tweeted by plenty of sports journalists (not just Aggie insiders) that USC offered Sumlin big money.

Link that shite. His team with a Heisman winner is not going to finish in the TOP 25. I fricking love the dude coaching yall.

Oh I see, so you got played. It happens to every program at some point.

Link what? The legions of Rantards who were saying things like "Sumlin is gone to USC! A&M Fuuuucccckkked!!!!!"
My God, man...have you been in North Korea or something?

Well, we had to pay to keep him, that's a fact. Was it a bad investment? Time will tell. But we sure as hell didn't pay around 4 million for a fat arse piece of shite midwesterner who get his arse blasted into bolivia in his first SEC season.

same was said about Petrino minus the fat part. point is judging a coach after year 1 is idiotic, but I expect nothing less from the Rant.

He is being paid to fend off suitors and in recognition of last seasons win over Bama. Aside from that I haven't seen a lot to warrant the enthusiasm around him.

I'm not interested in some liberal drivel about how peopel don't deserve their money, but what do you think was the pure time of college football when we can officially declare that it was pure? The 70s and 80s when players were getting suitcases full of cash?

It's hard to believe this topic has 11 pages of posts. This quote sums it up. Has Sumlin "earned" $5 mil. per year? Absolutely not. Sumlin is getting paid because A&M is anticipating he is the guy to make A&M an elite program. It's a gamble, but it's obviously a gamble A&M feels like they had to make to have a shot of competing in the SEC.

True. He is only going to finish with 20 wins in his first two season, including an 11-2 team that finished in the top 5 of the national rankings. His hasn't handled the media well, and hasn't recruited worth a shite. Nothing but the win at Bama.
Look, there are real reasons to worry that Sumlin is not going to meet the expectations we have for him. The fact is that he's never won a conference championship. But to act like there aren't reasons to think he is a top flight coach is just stupid. There are good reasons the Eagles and USC offered Sumlin the head job, and reasons the Houston Texans were interested. To pretend that it's all about one win at Bama is a little rantarded.
